Default Daniel Boone National Forest closed to all ORVs

[quote from Droopy]
I got a phone call from a good friend and Jamboree trail guide and I posted it on my club's forum...

This is taken from the www.jeepjamboreeusa.com website

The United States Forest Service has recently made the decision to close all off-road trails in the Daniel Boone National Forest. Even though many of the trails on the Daniel Boone Jeep Jamboree are on private land we gain access to them through Forest Service property. This decision by the Forest Service has left us with no other option than to cancel the 16th Daniel Boone Jeep Jamboree for this year. The Forest Service has indicated that this land closure is only temporary with hopes to have the trails reopened by sometime next season.

The good news is that Jeep Jamboree USA offers several other Jeep Jamboree events in close proximity to the Daniel Boone Jeep Jamboree, two of which are in the state of Kentucky. The Land between the Lakes Jeep Jamboree (May 5 - 7, 2006) is located in Marshall County, KY, while the Gateway to the Cumberlands Jeep Jamboree (Oct. 6 - 8, 2006) makes camp in Williamsburg, KY. Just over the Kentucky border is French Lick, Indiana; host to the 17th French Lick Jeep Jamboree (Oct. 13 - 15, 2006).

With all of these other options we hope to see your face at a Jeep Jamboree USA event this year. We apologize for any inconvenience this might have caused you or your family. If you have any additional questions regarding this land closure, please contact our office at (530) 333-4777.

I'm not sure what exactly is going on, but there is some info.

This sucks in a big way.

I went to the Daniel Boone JJ last year and it was the best wheeling I'd ever seen.

From other reading around, I understand there's been "tension" since last summer. Apparently there was a somewhat local (20-40 miles) area that allowed ATV riding - sort of an unoffical Harlan situation. The landowners closed down access and some ATVers started moving over to the Slade area - which is a combination of "non-ATV permitted" National Forest roads and old logging/oil well access trails on private land.

Then the "old story" unfolded, and ATVers started balzing unauthorized trails/bypasses, trespassing on private land, and allegedly had a confrontation with at least one landowner. So again, irresponsble behavior may result in the loss of access to excellent offroading land.

Not knocking ATVers (I hope to buy on or two soon) - but irresponsible actions by offroaders (dirtbike, ATV/UTV, Jeep/SWB, or FSRs) hurts us all.

Well that just about blows........

That was some of the funnest wheelin' terrain I've been on. Was on the challenge trailride series way back and rode through sections of the Boone'.
