Default How about a list of solid axle toys

What yr was the last yr for solid axle prerunner, 4runner and landcruiser?
Thanks. Sorry I dont know my Toyota models yet. Maybe a little help?
Also, what was the last yr for round headlights on the trucks and suvs?

From the factory, the 1979 - 1985 trucks had solid front axles, and the 1984-1985 4-runners.

All of the SFA toy axles are the same dimension, 56" WMS to WMS. '8 inch' ring and pinion (7.8" actually), 1.3125" 30 spline axles, 27 spline birfield outers, Aisin locking hubs (very strong).

The axles are all stamped/welded steel, leaf spring with SOA configuration. The basic housing was the same throughout, however, through the years, additional gusseting/bracing was added to the long drivers side tube. The 1985 axles are the most highly sought after due to the full-length gusset. (I have 2 of these, and an '83).

All have disc brakes with a solid rotor. Land cruiser vented rotors can be swapped on with the use of later IFS calipers.

The early 1st gen pickups have round headlights, this would be the 1979-80 models. The 81-83 first gens, like mine, had rectangular headlights.

All later toyota trucks use rectangular, as did all 4 runners, since they were based on the trucks.

Thanks, sounds like pretty stout axles.


Now what about Fuel Injection? What yrs? What motors are recommended?
May as well throw a little info about TCs, too! TIA

OK, Fuel Injection started in 1985.

We are talking about 22R motors here. The 22R is a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder. Its a nice motor, a workhorse like a 258. Just want to keep gearing correct for bigger tires and keep the weight from getting crazy.

When it became fuel injected, its then called the 22RE

Not ALL 85+ are fuel injected. The 2 bbl 22R was available until 1987. So, 1985 is the sought after year, you can find a solid axle and fuel injection.

My truck is a 1985 with the solid axle and fuel injected motor. Well, I'm only using the body of it, the frame is an 83 and I'm running an 83 motor with a Weber carb, but the fuel injection is going on soon....

There were limited 86-87 models with a fuel injected turbo 22RET, and after that there were the 3.0 V6s, which most people would rather have a 22R. The V6 has a reputation for eating head gaskets, and will hydrolock with oil on a flop onto the passenger side.


I don't know much about land cruisers, except they are expensive...

Land crusiers were solid axle until at least '97 (FJ80)
Some models had factory rear locker.
They are all SUA.
Not sure about the FI part though.

FJ80s had optional front and rear E-lockers, not just rear. There were also coil springs front and rear on those.

The axles are different from mini truck axles. Generally stronger with a larger ring gear and larger birfields I think.

These days, though with the availability of aftermarket shafts that put mini truck axles into dana 60 (stock) strength, its not much of an issue. The 8" R & P is pretty stout, too..


FJ40s ran a 4.2 liter straight siz, I believe. The origianl designs were done in the 50s when Japan was in reconstruction and many things were provides from our industry. Those motors are almost a clone of the Chevrolet inline six of the era...

1997 was the last year of solid axles for Land Cuisers in the US. Ironicly, every other country they were sold in carried over the 93-97 drive train (solid axles, 4.5L I6) to the new body style. US is the only country that got IFS and the 4.7L V8.

Although the 80 series Land Cruisers were availible from 91-97, only 93+ had the option of factory e-lockers. About ~7% of LCs shipped with the lockers.
