Default Trails Near Mears Michigan

When I was at the sand dunes, after a while I wanted to try some of the trails that the fellow at the Jeep tours place was talking about. Naturally he won't tell me where the trail is that he uses, but did point out that if we drove to the local walmart, we could find maps (topographical maps i think he was talking about) to help me locate the trails.

well I'm from windsor, fairly new to the sport so I didn't really know how to use it, as we have absolutally nothing like that within 2 hours on the canadian side. I accidently misread something, ended up where i wasn't suppose to be and got fined. I was not distroying anything, nor running off the trail, but I was tresspassing when I didn't know I was. The judge was kind enough to let me off the hook.

When I head back, I would like to give it another go on this trail thing. Can anyone point out any main stream trails that they know of in the area? I don't want to make the same mistake again.

If this is a broad question, and deserves an extremely detailed answer, I understand. I just thought I'd give it a shot cuz ppl here always seem willing to help.

TIA

How could they give you a ticket if you were on a trail? If it is passable with a car, technically they can't write you a ticket. If I remember correctly. Seems like Grandman and others have had to go to court to fight BS like what you went through.

Look at #44 on the mitten. Note the key at the bottom for trails for ORVs of all sizes if you’re in a jeep or truck, and you'll need an ovr sticker to be legal on those marked trails.

yeah we were in an orv area with orv sticker, but i missed the no jeep thingy. so i got my ticket for operating an ORV in a non designated ORV area. which then qualified me for trespassing? it took the state trooper over 3 hours to figure out all the codes and such because we were canadian. he was a super nice fellow, he wasnt going to press charges but the person that "caught" me doing it on "purpose" was standing there screaming the whole time. when i went to see the judge (the next day as my grandmother had passed and i had to head home and couldnt make it back for my hearing, which posed another problem cuz i was unsure of how the american law system worked), he took me immediately on a walk in appointment. he talked me thru stuff, i told him a plead guilty, as i was clearly at fault for not researching properly. but he said because of my kindness, he was willing to drop the ticket, i ended up just having to pay a small court fee. i couldnt believe the kindness that i recieved from the court house. truely amazing ppl.

and danza, thanks for the link

i've only been out there on those trails once, it was kinda like a arrow atv trail but with the signs to allow trucks also, lots of trees and tight turns. the dunes can get boring after a day or two, so the wooded trails are always a good time.

they have seasonal trails over by whippy dip over by the dune tours right accross from the dnr's main station. The trails go far not much obsticles but they do have a antique shop way back in there i dont know how much business they get it was kinda weird. I go up every summer almost everyweekend so if you get ahold of me before you go I will be glad to show you the trail and tag along if need be but there isnt a walmart around that area i think the closest walmart would either be ludington or muskegon so they lied to you there. It has a handsons food store kinda like an IGA and a pamida that is kinda like a walmart. also if you have been on the dune rides they take you toward the public beach for lake michigan and they take a right onto the road to get to there trail that takes them to there part of the dunes and if you take a left instead of a right it will also take you to some trails just keep your orv sticker on and read the signs im pretty sure you wont make that mistake again.
