The last four years, the market has taken a crap on itself from march-aug. This year doesn't look to be different. The savvy investors are pulling out, hence why the market it tanking. Look at the last 3 weeks of mutual fund trading, scary scary scary.
Yes, it is very true that you will make money over the long run, but you can make more by not being stubburn.

The problem is that if the best way to do tax deferred investments is through a 401K and the company options are limited I don't have alot of choices.
I tried managing my own and found I lost more money because I'm not savvy enough to really do well.
And yes, my investments tanked in 2000 but have come back because I got more diversified. When I had more of a choice at another company, I stuck everything in tech stocks because that's what I understood. Bad move!
Then I got smart and bought Starbucks & made it all back.
But at the end of the day, unless you have alot of time to follow it close, being well diversified in the stock market in low to medium risk has been pretty predictable.
