well if your dealing with a 3100 I think the first place to start is the throttle body. they gum up really bad and create all kind of horrors for the unsuspecting owners. the second thing is ignition coils & wires. they have a bad set up in the fact the coils can fry one at a time and then drop plugs. the idea here is to identify if your loosing spark to any cylinders. clean the throttle body & butterfly with carb clean and a tooth brush while your there. let me know what you find.

check the fuel pressure, if it drops off after the key is turned off you might have a stuck injector bleeding the fuel into the cylinder causing a flooding
concern. pull the plugs and take a look!

Check the coolant level, lots of problems with the upper intake manifold melting internally at the egr port, dumps coolant into intake manifold. I have replaced several engines due to hydro-locking and bending rods.

On the early ones (96-97 3800) we would have to replace both the upper and lower manifolds and reprogram the pcm, but GM came out with a updated lower intake manifold in 98 so your car should have it. If this is the problem I would recommend replace the upper manifold, (Dorman makes one) and replace the lower intake gaskets as these are probably leaking anyway.

If you are sure that is not the problem then pull the vac. hose off the fuel pressure regulator mounted on the fuel rail and check for any signs of fuel, it should be dry, I have replaced many for leaking fuel into the intake via the vac. hose.

sounds like it was that intake leaking coolant into the engine, if it didn't bend rods you can un-hydrolock it sometimes. i unlocked a 3800 buick lesabre 3 times.
