Haven't paid much attention to minimum wage...

Minimum Wage to Rise in Michigan

Michigan Governor Jennifer M. Granholm has signed legislation that will raise the state's minimum wage from $5.15 per hour to $7.40 per hour in three steps over the next 27 months.

The minimum wage in Michigan will increase to $6.95 on October 1, 2006, and then to $7.15 on July 1, 2007, and finally to $7.40 on July 1, 2008.

The legislation notes that if a majority of voters approve a minimum wage proposal that may be on the ballot in November, the state would adopt the minimum wage set by the ballot proposal.
Until a few days ago... did this go to vote last year? How do you feel about it?

I think that it sucks for small business. Its good for young kids in highschool, it sucks for the entry level fresh out of college person who isn't making much more per hour then min. wage. It also sucks for labor type positions that used to pay nearly double min. wage and now only pay about 3-4 bucks per hour more. Mostly I think it sucks for small businesses. We'll see it in the form of price increases, which will drive us to larger retailers whcih will put more small businesses out.

Minimum wage is nothing more then a tax on EVERYONE who doesn't make minimum wage.

Fucking blows. Granholm is a total jerkoff

It temporarily gives minimum wage earners more money until inflation/cost of living catches up in 3-5 months due to the raise in minimum wage.

This isn't good for anyone!
Min. wage jobs will disapear as employers will have to do with less.
This is a very bad thing to do to this state at this time, or anytime for that matter.

It's good in the short term for the high school kid working at mcdonalds, but that is about it. Otherwise I agree.

I'm self employed and start people around 11.00 an hour depending on their abilities. I can't imagine trying to live on 7.40 an hour. When I was 18 I think it was around 3.50 an hour. I think its a insult. I won't work for under 25 an hour today.

I wonder what percentage of the workforce gets paid minimum wage and will actually get a raise from the increase?

I think it has been in need of a raise. Minimum wage should get you at least equal to poverty level. I'm pretty sure a years work at $5.15/hr (about 10K/yr) was a few thousand below poverty level.
I could see a few changes here and there, but I don't see prices going through the roof, or even increasing much more than they do every year. I just don't think there are enough actual min wage jobs out there to cause across the board issues. A lot of places that hire at min give you a raise in a few months if you don't suck. So then it doesn't count as a min wage job anymore.

Then why not make it $10.00 or $15.00 per hour?
You can't feed a family on $7.50, so how about $20.00, thats fare.

Minimum wage is not a living wage. It's not meant to support a family on. I think it's stupid.

What ever happened to proving your worth?

I COULD BE RONG HERE BUT I DONT THINK MINIMUM WAGE WAS SET UP FOR PEOPLE TO LIVE OFF I THINK IT WAS TO STOP JOB SHOPS FROM CHEETING CHILDREN OUT OF THERE TIME. BUT THAT IS A NICE IDEA TO FORCE COMPANYS TO PAY UNSKILLED, UNEDUCATED WORKERS MORE SO THEY CAN AFFORD MORE FUBU!!!!
