Looks like one of the designs jeep was trying to sell to the army some time in the 80s right before the hmmwv took over.

One thing I know for sure is them badazz Armstrong Xtra-traction rubbers that thing is rolling on.

around the end of the `70s and going well into the `80s everything had square head lights.
if you look at the front of the frame and the low slung door jambs its not a Jeep. I suspect its one of the few test photos of a test drive of a prototype. the Humvee program was started back around `79 and they didn't get approval for production till around `83. so there were loads of prototypes. I know first hand there were 21 different platforms that it was used for. so its hard saying what the picture is from.

"Vintage Photo US Army Soldier in a Jeep or Humvee type vehicle in Vietnam or at a training camp? 8x10 "

I love that description.

"It's a dude somewhere in a wheeled hoopamadenchie." - That would sound as intelligent.

Not as many people use those search terms, however. :tonka:

True, although widely recognized, "hoopamadenchie" is not a computer term. :tonka:

It's not Vietnam vintage, it has square headlights, and the sand and terrain is deffinately NOT vietnam.

It appears to be a variant of the teledyne 'cheetah'... an unsuccessful bidder on teh HMMWV program, as Yetti mentioned.

Note the extreme similarity(except for the grill) to these pics: (wheel housings, door opening, filler cap location behind rear wheel, armstrongs in the first pic, front crossmember in the first pic, etc)

After they lost the bid, it became the Lamborghini LM002 for the Saudi Army:

(Lambo V12 replaced the dodge 360)

I about soiled myself when I saw one of those LMs roll into an Action Auto for petrol up here in lowly old Bay City once many years ago. I had to go ask. He was on a test run from Car & Driver magazine (out of A2) taking a ride out to the Thumb.
