Nice to hear that you stopped to help out a friend, if anything to help pull him out of the ditch!

She looked fine, she was standing outside of her vehicle. (if it was her, they drive a gray h2, truck-type style, right?). Didnt look too smashed up, just slide off into a ditch I think. I was trying to keep the demo on the road at the time, lol.

It's funny you post this, considering what your sig says. Did you not read all of his post? Ask Gman, I believe its illegal for a motorist to pull out another motorist...unless the cop would of let it happen. Its a liability issue...thats why tow truck drivers are trained and have flashing lights, flares, etc for the safety of them and other motorist.

If the police was all ready there and the road is slick there not going to want you stoping there . I assume the road was slick to end up in the ditch , do you really think he is going to be able to pull out an H 2 on slick roads ?

Do you know it is illigal to block a lane in any manner , even if you are a tow truck ? A tow truck can not block any portion of a lane with out the police doing so . Its a matter of liability big time , you try to help out , some one hits you i gurantee your ass is in a sling . Side road in the middle of no where odds are your fine , busy e way = no way .

Well, I don't know Mel...... No offence or disrespect intended towards Mel.

However, I have stopped to offer service to vehicles in the ditch when the police were there on the side, and they had no problem with me helping, they sometimes even thank me. I guess it's all on how you approach the situation.

I try to stop as much as I can when I see people in trouble! I suppose that I would want someone to do the same for me.

Also depends a great deal on the officer and his attitude of the moment .

When did it become illegal to help out others in a time of need? I know enough not to block traffic, and what my limitations are.....

Aren't the liabilities between me and the person I'm helping?

If anything, if I saw a person, especially a friend in the ditch, wheter the cope were there or not, I would stop just to see if they were alright....

Exactly... even if its just a ride home. Another subject that has been over-analized by this forum. :stan3:

Hi Everyone!!!!!!!!

Was I returning from Margaritaville? Nope, you should know I would never leave if I got there....In fact, I didn't even have Radio Margaritaville on when the H2 decided to go off roading....I wasn't on my cell phone, wasn't applying make up or even stirring my morning coffee.

I was just driving about 40 miles an hour on what obviously were very slippery roads. From what we can gather after surveying the scene, I started to fishtail right after going over the railroad tracks just North of 38 on Sheridan Road. There must have been enough bump in the tracks that caused my foot to tap the gas pedal because I started a slight fishtail and my attempt to turn into it to straigten out wasn't helping. I slid a good half a football field before the H2 slid into the ditch, missing the for sale sign, the mailboxes, and stopping (with brake help and my panic) about 5 feet from the concrete driveway culvert.

No injury to me, no injury to the Lead Sled. It was fun trying to open my door--was tilted enough that I had just enough room to get out before hitting the ground with the door.

The "man in blue" that was helping me was really cool. He was enroute to another call when he saw me, and attempted to stop and check on me. I figured he wasn't stopping since he kept going. He slid and ended up turning around close to the tracks that started my adventure. He said as long as I was okay and I had called for a tow, he didn't need to do anything. I was fine with that, but then wondered why he wasn't leaving...

He couldn't--any attempt he made to move his vehicle forward or backward resulted in him sliding close to the ditch. So, he calls for a tow truck for himself and while we wait the 20 minutes or so, we watch three other vehicles slide around attempting to stop for his lights and another car do a graceful donut and end up in the neighboring driveway. She couldn't have done that again had she wanted to!

As far as having someone help tow me out--I don't think you could have. The road was so icy that I doubt you could have gotten enough traction to do anything. I was able to drive back and forth in the ditch, but it was steep enough that I couldn't climb up without sliding. And what's the point of gunning it to get out only to land on the same ice that allowed me to Dororthy Hamill earlier??? Fabbro's Towing did a great job, I was worried when I saw the tow truck lean my way as the winch started, but I guess it didn't bother him. He just spun me around and brought me out of the ditch. He laughed and said "I've always wanted to pull out a Hummer." Ahhhhhhhhh, the joys of H2 ownership... The cop stopped traffic since the tow truck was squarely in the middle of the road. He called the Road Commission three times to come out and salt--they sent some guy in a Ford truck out to "assess the situation." The only salt truck I saw in the hour I was there turned down Sheridan at 38 only to back up, stop traffic, and head West on 38 into Vassar....Go figure. Must not have been icy enough to warrant salting....

The roads sucked today. I learned that the H2 is graceful on ice. I reinforced the notion that ice is slippery and unpredictible regardless of your rig's abilities, and above all, that I HATE WINTER!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for your concern. Other than some cold wet feet from standing in the snow and rattled nerves, I'm fine. I'm headed out in a bit for a meeting and hoping that the roads are better. I told work I'd try it again this afternoon, I was going to spend the morning looking for cheap flights to St. Somewhere

Oh, and Mike? I thought of you this morning once my escapade was over thinking, "I bet his winch would come in handy about now..."
