if your looking for small and sufficient for trail rides, then i like radioshack and walmart.

if your looking top of the line with all the gadgets then somebody else will have to chime in.

Check Campers world, thats were I bought mine and it was on sale too. I have a Cobra 19LX or something like that and it works good. The hand held don't get out to far. I have one but only used it once and nobody could hear me because they were more a couple of miles away. Hey try that truck stop up at 4 mile road in Graying, I know they have some there.

If you wanna get him something nice, check out Galaxy, or Uniden. Cobra has went down in quality in the past few years.

As far as handhelds, i wouldnt waste your time, most arent worth the metal they are spamped out of.

Handhelds work pretty well outdoors, and as long as you aren't inside of a vehicle.

Just for reference...Uniden and cobra radios are the same, just with different badging. Like Ford and Mercury.

If you are looking at either a Connex, Uniden, or Cobra (the order I would buy them in, actually) radio make sure you get one made in the Phillipeans. The ones made in China suck. Ranger is great, but you might need a HAM license if you get one of the combo units with the 2 Meter radio built in. Personally, I would look into getting something from Connex or Uniden that has been "peaked and tuned". Basically, this means that it has had internal adjustments done that allow it to put out a clean and powerful signal. This MAY take you above the legal limit of 4 Watts output, but not always. Besides, no one checks for that stuff any more anyways.

What he said -- though i dont have experience with Connex personally. Uniden does make the radio shack radios, and personally that is what i have in my YJ, only because it was small cheap and I knew it would get wet. Been VERY happy with it. I get out over 5 miles (could have went further but the guy I was talking to was in the middle of a forest) with only the antenna tuned, no internal tweaks can't beat it...

Had a tuned and tweaked cobra in my old s-10 nothing like built in kickers and dial-a-watt havnt used that radio in years though, too expensive for a jeep
