Default shooting stats Iraq vs DC

I received this in an email:

Regardless of where you stand on the issue of the U.S. involvement in Iraq, here's a sobering statistic.

There has been a monthly average of 160,000 troops in the Iraq theatre of operations during the last 22 months, and a total of 2,112 deaths. That gives a firearm death rate of 60 per 100,000 soldiers per month.

The firearm death rate in Washington D.C. is 80.6 per 100,000 persons for the same period. That means that you are about 25% more likely to be shot and killed in the U.S. Capital than you are in Iraq.

The first thing I thought was, shouldn't we compare Bagdad to DC, or the US to Iraq? Statistics......:chiefwoohaw:

Or we could try understanding the difference between deaths per month vs. deaths per year.

In 1991, the worst year on record for Washington DC, there were 80.6 homicides per 100,000 people... for the hole year. For those of you that can't do math, the death rate for US soldiers, based on the stated stats would by 720 per year per 100,000.

I'm confused...how can there be less per month but more per year?

if there is 60 per 100k per month

vs

80 per 100k per month

if you multiply each by 12.....how do you get less per year?

Yes. But the murder rate in Washington have never been 80 per 100k per month, the highest it ever was, in 1991, was 80 per 100k per year, or about 6.7 per 100k per month.

No offense, but your sources aren't much better half of the time.

I already figured it out for you. They are comparing deaths per 100k per month in Iraq with deaths per 100k per year in Washington DC

if you're talking about the fact that I link from crooksandliars.com, look at the post next time, everything is coming from some type of news source, be it a local newspaper or the new york times, its not just the rantings of some "crazy liberal".

My point is that it's off the internet and it's from the media. It isn't all the reliable.
