Default how do you replace an ign. cyl in an xj?

The 98 xj I just bought didn't come with keys. I took the vin# and went to the dealer and they cut me a key. It works in the pass door but that's it. I am looking at replacing the lock cylinder in the column but the Haynes manual tells me that you have to put the key in and turn it to the run position to access the release button for the cylinder. If I could do that, I wouldn't need a cylinder!! Any hints? Do I have to take the whole column apart? Any help is appreciated!

Maybe sticking a brand new key into the cylinder caused the plates to move beyond where they normally move, and they could get stuck. Try spraying some WD40 into the cylinder. Then insert the key, and tap the end of the key with a small hammer.

the cylinder release is at the bottom and has to be undone by turning the key counter clockwise past its normal stop, when you reach that point just pull outward on the whole thing, it should pull right out. if you lost the key the drill out the center and turn it back by hand.
