Default 6.5 Diesel

What is everybody's opinion of that engine? How long does it run for usually, what should I expect to replace, etc... Im possibly concidering a 95 GMC with a 6.5, and 180k miles. I just want some more opinions.

I owned one for almost 2 years. I avg' around 19-22 mpg.. in a 3/4 ton 4x4 w/ 3.73 gears. Most of the time I drove like it was a race car, and still got good mileage. Never had a problem with cold starts and never plugged it in (down to -10 to -15ish).

I had exhaust and an air filter on mine.

THey don't have a lot of power for towing, but will do.

The first that that will probably go is the PMD or FSD (Pump mounted driver or fuel solenoid driver) It's the brain for the injector pump, and is also mounted on the injector pump in the front valley of the intake, where it is succumed to a TON of heat. They are electronic and they burn up. The best bet is to get a relocation kit, mount it under the front bumper out of the heat, I had problems with mine, bought the relocation kit with a spare black box for 150 bucks or something off Ebay, and hadn't had a problem with it. (Truck started to stall after it got warm, every once in a while.)

I had a problem of the truck smoking on start up, put new injectors and glow plugs in it (right before I sold it... D'Oh!) and it didn't fix the problem.. To this day I dont know what it was.. and probably will never be able to figure it out.

A lot of people don't like them, just for the fact that they don't have the power of the other diesels at the time they were made.

If ya have any questions about them, lemee know, I've read/learned quite a bit about them.. the motor in my truck was replaced at 160k by the previous owner becuase it burnt 1/2 quart of oil between changes (6000 miles) so I can't really speak for the longevity of them.

If you're looking for a diesel that's a workhorse, buy a cummins. That's what I did.
