Default New Dodge Ram Cummins or MDS Hemi

Im gonna be picking up a new ram in the spring and i was interested in knowing the mileage of the Cummins both city and highway....and if you know about the towing mileage taht would be helpful (ill be towin bout 4-5 thousand pds)

im tryin to compare it between the multidisplacement hemi because i was set on getting the Hemi but i didnt know if the diesel was more worth while and maybe if the mileage would be better?

i guess i should add it would be an extended cab, 4x4, with the new 5speed Automatic Trans(Hemi) or 4speed Auto(Cummins)

1. Buy the CTD. Although the Hemi will get the job done, you will be very disappointed with the mileage.

2. By the time you're ready to buy, the 68RFE 6-speed automatics will be out behind the CTD's and will be rated 40hp over the other drivetrains. (350/650 vs 350/610).

I have a 2006 CTD 4x4. I am getting about 17mpg with about 90% city driving. I have spent MANY hours behind the wheel of an MDS Hemi ram. Buy the CTD. The only time I would get the Hemi in a 2500 is in the Power Wagon but that is the only engine available. As a side note: I have wheeled the Power Wagon at the Mounds and in Moab. It is a very capable rig. Something else to consider.

the MDS hemi ram does do better than a non MDS engine, the MDS is only available in a 1/2 ton. you can get 20mpg @ 70 mph with an MDS.

the diesel will have that new 6 speed auto also.

i originally posted about the 6speed and changed it becuase i thought u guys would think i was an idiot. So that CTD sees equally good mileage, i do not really plan on wheeling this thing, more of a DD and tow rig to pull my wrangler........thanks for the input more to consider

DIESEL

on a side note, the Power Wagons would be even more awesome with a Cummins!

I can't beleive the price of plain jane Dodges now days. I went to look at a couple for work 2500, crew cab, long bed, Cummins, autos, vinyl intererior, ugly steel wheels, plastic grills, no power options, but did have a/c and criuse, both where $42k. I found plane jane Chevys, and Fords for $6k less. Dodges always where the cheaper priced vehicle of the three, doesn't seem that way anymore.

sorry kinda off topic.

I know the guys who made the choices not to use the CTD in the power wagon. it was to nose heavy and wouldn't get out of its own way in the mud that is why the Hemi was the best choice. its 700lbs lighter and makes it so the axles carry the same weight when running empty. with the CTD the front axle weight is like 4200-4400 lbs depending on the model.

CTD for sure. I bought one last month, albiet a hopped up 12 valve, but I don't think I'll ever have a truck with a different engine. And the Common rail engines are pretty darn easy to put get some nice hp and mileage out of with a programmer. If I was to get a new truck it'd definitely be a 6 speed auto cummins. With a Durasmack/Ally close second.

And you'll laugh at everyone with their gas motors when they go to resell them for less than half of what you get out of yours.

:)
