40-year NASCAR fan.

TV coverage is marginal at best - I don't watch it much, because I get tired of:
"Let's check in on Dale Jr..." He's running 31st and hasn't been a factor all race, but we'll cut away from the actual battle for the lead to make sure the number 8 Bud car get's it's TV time. Face it, despite the best equipment, team, huge day 1 fan base, and the best "cost is no object" support network possible, he wasn't even in the running last year. He "ain't got it" - he's just not "Ol' Dale" reincarnated. But then, I wasn't much of an "Intimidator" fan either.

Seeing it in person is light years from TV - sounds, smells, etc... But then the difference between MIS and Bristol is the same difference as between TV and MIS - it's the same thing, magnified 100X. At Bristol you FEEL the race - it's louder in the stands (everywhere in the stands) than an aircraft carrier deck during flight operations. Even with a headset, it felt like a Ted Nugent concert afterwards (probably why I'm getting deaf). When someone spun out, you had to blow the tire dust "marbles" off of your beer. Awesome.

I've heard the arguments how NASCAR doesn't stack up to F1. Brock Yates wrote a great article some years ago about this very subject. The gist of it was there were two races one Sunday - a NASCAR race and a F1 race. Michael Andretti was leading the F1 race when his front spoiler was bumped off a few degrees and he was out of the running. The cars are finely tuned and work against the aero forces, yadda yadda yadda. At antoher race, Bill Elliot got knocked into the wall and they had to hammer, beat, and tape his T-Bird back together. Despite the damage, Bill was able to resume race pace (which, incientally was the same speeds as the F1 race) and ended up winning.

So which is "real racing" - i.e. more about the driver than the machine?

That said, NASCAR has gotten too PC these days, and the homogonized clone cars are not cutting it.

I heard a suggestion I liked - get the cars closer to stock and have everyone run the same car, varying cars by track (i.e. Chevys at MIS, Dodges at Bristol, etc...). This may mean slower speeds and FWD racers, but it's a little more pure. I think this has merit.

Oh, and no rice in NASCAR, ever. I don't care how many satellite plants they build, or how many journalists and politicians they brainwash they are imports, and always will be.

Could someone interpret this for me? If this is "Fuck you for racing! Bitch!" Count me in! I'll buy Wakebabe tickets and Budweiser for that deal.

If I was 20 years younger and less married, I'd get a case of Bud and be headed down to Hotlanta for that spring race... :tonka:

I like Nascar, but to sit and watch a whole race... hell no
Things only get really interesting in the last 10 laps or so.

i know i'll get alot of heat for this, but the only part of pavement racing that i like are the crashes. other than that it's boring watching the same cars driving in circles.

I like nascar, I don't like the future of nascar, with this new car for 07 possibly.

I'm not a big fan of nascar, to boring, unless they crash. I like drifting and motocross, lots of excitement.

NASCAR drivers aren't as athletic as Olympic athletes, but to say they're out of shape is ignorant. Astronauts don't compete in athletic events, but they have to be in excellent shape for what their body goes through. NASCAR drivers are similar because they require alot of stamina to be in a car that can get almost 130 degrees inside, driving their car to the edge for 4 hours or more.

A couple of years back, Mark Martin's power steering failed at Bristol.

Several hundred 3-40 second laps in a 3000+ pound car on a track with essentially no straightaway in a 100+ degree car and working against broken power steering.

A bit more physical than most would expect - and Mark Martin works out hard and is in awesome shape.

for moto cross you need to be in physical and mental shape. you need to be able to stand up and take a beating while racing plus be strong enought o be able to pick the bike up when you eat shit. take rocks in the chest and keep going. the mental part comes in when you flying over a jump and are only a few inchs from someone elses bars and be able to think that you can land it pull away. riden beats you to death at a fast rate. its a great sport. everyone says that moto guys dont need to be in shape but to compete and be at the top of the class you need to train.

Heh, I voted for the first one. One of our buddies is the PR rep for Nextel Cup :tonka:

It's okay, to be honest. I like it cuz my hubby and son like it. Of course, we have a few signed things like tires and car parts since we have an "in" with Nextel Cup. That's what makes it kinda fun for me, I'll have the race on as background noise while doing other things. I also like it when we have peeps over to play poker while watching the race. One of these years I might even attend a race.......
