Default Location issue

I had a thread locked http://www.greatlakes4x4.com/showthread.php?t=34307 because I failed to specify in my profile my location. I have no problem with the thread being locked because of a current rule; no issue with mod etc...but...

Even if we specify in the thread (dealing with sales and wanted stuff) our location, why are we required to fill in our profile with that information?

My only concern is when someone searches for any internet info for my screen names, I'd rather my info be vague and not direct someone to my town, birthdate, etc... Also in other threads I'd prefer not to have my town listed, but if my profile is filled out, then I have no choice but to have others know this bit of info.

Am I totally out in left field?

It's 'cause PP is hard ass, and a E-thug in the Marketplace. Sorry but get use to it, nothing you can change.

Just put your location in the for sale post, and you will be fine.

"SE" michigan doesn't really help though

I just changed the marketplace rules thread to change this. PP doesn't want to piss anyone off, and he was just enforcing the rules of the marketplace. And if you noticed, the marketplace is no longer filled with 5 posts in each thread asking location.

Nobody will do it at all now. People will have to start going to other sites to search for ZIP codes just to figure out where the hell you are. Doesn't matter if you put the ZIP code - people are lazy and will just start asking where you are in the thread anyway. If you PM your location to someone, someone else will still ask and you'll have to send a PM every time someone asks in a thread. Sooner or later, someone you told your location to will end up posting it in the thread anyway and the effort is defeated.

What I don't understand is why people don't think that their town will be found in the text of their thread in a search as opposed to their profile if someone is looking for them. If they really want to find you, they will read every thread that got a hit with your name.

The better solution would be to take the location line out of the mini-profile in every post, but still include it on the full profile page. Then people would just view your full profile to see your location and it wouldn't appear everywhere. Can vBulletin do that?

sure, vbulletin can do that.

Why would people NOT want to have their city name in their for sale post? I don't get it

I don't get it either.

If someone wants to track you down via teh intraweb, whether or not you have a location next to your name really won't make any difference.

There is one particular problem with not requiring it in the profile and letting them put it in the thread instead. I can't make them do it. Previously, I could lock the thread and they could still edit their profile. If they refuse to put the city into the thread, I can't lock it since they would then not be able to comply. The only thing I can do is give out more Infractions, which people generally view as being more asshole-ish than the standard location request post I usually make. It would then take 5 Infractions to reach the same result as locking the one thread, but then they would be able to post anywhere on GL at all, so they still wouldn't be able to comply.

maybe we should make an address a required setup, so if they don't follow through, you can just drive to their house and kick their ass

Would it be possible to hide our locations in our profiles to guests but not to registered users? How about hiding locations in all theads except For Sale and Wanted sections? I agree that it is nice to see where a user is located, but when I'm posting about my nekid neighbor chick, I'd rather keep my location private ;) and make a user search for my location manually!!

I'd like to, slowly I know, get my public info out of the public arena. Nearly impossible, but I'd like to undo what I've already done on many other sites....when you register they ask you birthdate, last name etc.... I always put false info in birthdates and unless I plan on going back to a site again, I give false name and address and phone info. I guess I could simply give false location as well....hmmm that was a simple answer!!! ha!

well, if you are going to sell anything via any other method, such as autotrader you have to put your phone number in.

I'm thinking there is a low % of people who are scared of people knowing their city, so I won't worry about it.

That would technically satisfy the way the rules used to be, but it would piss someone off in the Marketplace and they would most likely call you out on it right in your thread. (I know I would.)

If someone does not want to list where they are, they are not going to sell their shit, that's their loss.

ok, the rule has been made.

http://www.greatlakes4x4.com/announcement.php?f=15

If you don't have a city, you won't be able to sell anything.

Somebody should tell Leanz that. I haven't checked this morning, but she's overdue for lockage per the latest rule revision. :tonka:

I don't think wanted ads need a city.

saying oakland county seems fair enough.

If someone WANTS something, they can prolly drive to get it

That's going to fukc things up even more and it causes the same result that you are saying you want to avoid - lots of posts asking where you are. It also turns the "Marketplace Rules" into the "VehiclesforsalePartsforSaleFreebies Rules".

If I see someone post a Wanted ad for something I have and there's no location, I don't even like to respond because I don't want the person to say that they will buy it and then ask me to meet them in St. Ignace.

ok

Well if someone has "OAKLAND COUNTY" in their profile, and they are posting a WANTED AD, I think it can be over looked.

If someone is selling something, I think it should be different.

or maybe it should all be the same

or maybe I should start drinking at work
