2nd Gen 4Runner.. what to look for?

not really tech, but toyota question: for daily driving purposes, is there anything to avoid or make sure I get when buying a 99ish 4runner? Any tell tale signs of problems? Any buyer beware type stuff known on these trucks? Does anyone have one now and really like it or really hate it? Your MPG?

Still a 3.0 liter, or did they get a 3.4 by then?

I know there were big cylinder head/head gasket issues with them.

thanks Jesus .

BTT, need to know by tomorrow night.

There is a recall, I think unlimited mileage on the head gaskets. I don't remember on that, it might be just an external leak, not into the engine itself.

The 3.slow is good for nothing but a boat anchor........there was indeed a recall on some of the head gaskets but I don't remember which ones, and they are known for being completely gutless (hence 3.slow) especially in a 2nd gen 4runner (what year btw) which are on the heavy side. I had one once in a t100 and the best I could get for mileage was 15 going down hill in a tail wind.

As for the rest of the truck they are pretty decent.....i believe there was issue's with the steering relay rod (perhaps even a recall), and they rust out if not taken care of just like any Toyota does. suspension wise they are fine for daily driving.......however if lifted they can get real tippy real quik do to the rear suspension design.

ALL TOY REAR AXLES HAVE A AIR VENT THAT RUST SHUT THEN THIS HAPPENS YOUR DIF OIL WILL EXPAND ON LONG TRIPS AND BLOW THE REAR AXLE SEALS. SAME FOR YOUR T CASE AND FRONT AXLE

From some sites I just checked, I believe the head gasket issues on the 3.4 were fixed by mid 97, under special service campaign X01.

X02 was something for 99 runners, something to do with some wiring issue, I believe. Don't think it was a big deal..

The 3.4 was introduced in the 4Runner's in 1996. There was nothing wrong with the old 3.0's besides some headgasket issues. Otherwise it is a very reliable engine and will last a very long time if taken care of.

The 3.0 I drove didn't seem an stronger than my 22REs I've had but they didn't use the 3.0 in '99 IIRC. I had a '91 with over 200k on it and it ran fantastic(22RE w/5sp). Only thing was the backwindow had to be fixed to go up and down(@$200). They quit that crappy power window set-up around '95 I think.

I'm happy with my 3.4 in my Taco. The 4Runners are nice trucks. Enjoy it if you get it.

While we are discussing 4Runners. Anyone ever spot one of those 89-92 2 doors? I saw one in Grand Rapids a few years ago.

I still have my Tacoma and for the $$ I could bearly buy the tubing for what I paid for the Juggy. plus finding adapters for the 1UZ is Big$$, I can bolt any sbc trans to my LT1.

as far as the trans I would have the filter changed and use whatever Toyota suggests. a flush is pretty useless without changing the filter. I have never been a fan of syn trans fluid.

I've seen them before. They are very rare.
