i was looking at the rockstomper web site and they further down the page rope extensions with both ends being looped with a metal peice in there to hold the loops open(not sure on correct name) but how in the hell do you connect the 2 ropes together being that schakles are bad to hook together like that

I ran Rockstomper line for about 8 months before I parted out my toyota truggy. I then got a winch with masterpull line already in it. I ended up getting some Olive drab colored winch line from some place called lousville offroad or something. It is pretty sweet, and matches the landcruiser. The masterpull line went onto anothers friends winch, he used a couple of times with out issue.

It is all pretty much the same. Just find a good price.

I've heard mud kills synthetic line?

I need to replace my 3/8" cable and was thinking of upgrading.

I'm sure it does, just like mud kills tow straps. I'm going to keep my $300 piece of rope clean.

i dont really see any other way to hook 2 together... the could maybe fit into the other end of it but in the end that to would be like a schackle or maybe since its synthic rope you can use a schakle since it drops to the ground as soon as it breaks? who knows... please do post up as i am very cerious about this

They say it's safe because of the no stretch thing....dunno. I use a winch weight all the time either way.

No shackles are ok to hook like that. You are not supposed to jerk shackles which you don't do with a winch.

He means putting a line to a shackle and then to another line.

Sorta like hooking 2 straps together...

No, he said shackles aren't meant to be jerked, which is not true.

The reason you don't hook two straps with shackles has nothing to do with jerking forces, has to do with not loading shot into the slingshot thats aimed at your face....

Jerking creates a spike in kinetic energy and when you have a tow strap which creates a lot of kinetic energy due to it stretching you have a loaded weapon. With a winch the kinetic energy is much lower and while still slightly dangerous does not possess the destructive force of a jerking tow strap.

Before you even say anything I have been standing next to a synthetic rope when it broke and I have been standing next to a wire rope. I have also been nearly hit with a GM tow hook after a tow strap ripped it off the frame of a K5. The hook flew over 100' from the K5. The winch rope fell limp and barely made it 20'.

I think what your all saying is that the D-ring on the vehicle is OK, cuz that isn't going to come loose, chances are the line or strap will break first. No D-ring in the middle of straps of course and the winch rope....hmmmm....how would you attach it with that chunk of metal in the eye keeping it open? I'd guess you would have to use a shackle...can't loop them, the eye would damage the rope....

I have Rockstompers rope, 4 years now I think? Lots of mud, no problems. Used to DD up until a year ago, no visible damage. Don't bother with 5/16, only 3/8+ is worth a damn.

Yup, mine broke when I was hooked up and turtled on a big rock. The winch had pulled till it stalled. The Jeep slid to the side and then down a gully. Shocked the winch rope. It snapped, I backed into a tree. The rope bunched about 6 inches into the fairlead and the rest was straight out in front of the Jeep.

The other end, that was hooked to the tree was about 15 feet long, and was neatly wrapped up at the bas of the tree it was connected to, like someone rolled it there on purpose. Ever seen how the boaters roll their line up on a dock when they are tied up? All spiraled nicely? That's exactly how it was sitting. Strangest thing.
