Broken torsion bar removal

So I'm replacing the torsion bars in a Astro van and I was wondering what exactly holds these things in?

I've removed the adjuster bolts and retainers and tried to removing the bars. Reading in the Chiltons book they say remove the adj screws and retainer plates then slide them forward into the Lower A frame.

What am I missing?

I have it on stands with the adjusters removed.
I've tried hitting them with a hammer to get them to slide.
I've tried getting the cross member out but to no avail.

Air hammer and heat usually works.

The bars generate so much heat from twisting that they get stuck in the control arms pretty good.

Thanks, I was hoping I wasn't missing anything.

I don't have an air hammer but I do have a 3lb sledge. I was just hoping I wasn't missing a clip.

However that just means the broken one is going to suck even more.
