Default dana 44 gear question

i have a lp dana 44 as my new rear axle. i am going to get a detroit locker, so i will get a whole new carrier. i am going to use 4:88 gears. my question is what gears to i get, the thicker gears or the regular ones? since the locker will be for the lower gear ratios, i will need the regular thickness ones right? thanks.

I believe when you order the Detroit, you will specify which model to get....i.e. 3.73's and up or 3.55's and down. The Detroit should have the ring gear mounting location offset to accept those gear ranges.

I believe, thou don't know, that the thick/thin can come into play with D44 Rubi fronts and if you run the wrong carrier....edit: yeah standard ones!

i thought the locker gear range would specify what gears too, just wanted to be sure.

Get a Detroit for 3.92 and numerically higher, and regular 4.88s. The pinion style has nothing to do with the carrier, and the break is 3.92 and up/3.73 down for the D44. The Rubi uses a thicker gear, but it also uses different size ring gear bolts.

one more thing, the carrier i have is 3:55 i think. (3.5 turns of the yoke to turn carrier once) anyway...if i don't have the cash to get a detroit locker for a few months, could i get the bigger gears (since that is what the carrier will use for 4:88's right?) and when i get the locker, put those onto the locker? will this work, or is the locker a bit wider and mess up the alignment of the teeth? thanks.

Sure, you could buy the regular 4.88s and put them on the 3.92 and up Detroit when you get it.

You just can't put the 4.88s in your axle using the carrier you have in there now...

that's what i was wondering, if the thicker gear would work both ways, but no go apparently. i'll probably just look for the lower gear ratio carrier in case the locker is further out than i hope.
