Is there fuel at the fuel rail on the engine? Can you hear the fuel pump running?

Sounds like the fuel pump burnt up from running out of gas.

You need to check fuel pressure also. Pushing the shrader valve and seeing fuel squirt out is not flawless indication of fuel pump condition. Next verify spark. If no spark then suspect crankshaft position sensor or cam position sensor. After that there are a number of small variables that could contribute to a no spark condition that can not be diagnosed over the internet. A way to cheat with the spark test is to spray some starting fluid in the air cleaner while someone cranks the motor. If the engine starts and runs briefly, then suspect a fuel delivery issue.

Check the grounds...the strap on the back of the motor, ground at the coil, and I think there's one around the trans dipstick tube area. I had issues with the one around the trans dipstick on my xj.

Sounds like no spark then. Probably needs a sensor or computer.

Not sure what year your dealing with but tj did this to me once. It was a coil on plug style and the magnet inside the cam sensor fell off. Cheap and easy fix. Just took awhile to find it.

ok, quit swapping parts, you need to check 2 things right now.

1. what is the fuel pressure?
2. does it have spark?

you keep swapping parts back and forth but the only thing you're checking is if that part is the bad part. right now the only symptom you have is "no start"

Take the cam sensor off the oil pump drive and make sure that there is still a good tone wheel under there. I have seen a few that would fall apart and wreck the cam sensor and pump drive. Also check at the injectors for 12v on the green wire orange strip (I think) while cranking. If there is no power ther many of the other sensors are also lacking voltage.

What is the actual number? Without this, offering advice is pointless.

It is common that a fuel pump can run but not deliver enough pressure to start or run. I am a professional mechanic and I diagnose problems like this systematically. If you don't have a proper diagnostics you will just piss more money away than you need to. If you get the fuel pressure, I will compare it to spec and see where you stand. If good, I will instruct you as to what and how to check the next item that may be causing you problems.

Ruining it out of fuel could make the injectors stick shut

Pull the coil rail off and plug a spark plug into it and lay it on the head to ground. wear rubber gloves if you're going to hold onto it while doing it. The kind you women folk use while cleaning the shitter
