Seems like TH-400/NP205 would be a solid setup.

he was spouting off about an atlas too

so sounds like 4l60 with the stock case that he has, or 400 with an atlas...

Why atlas if you go T400? 205 will bolt up to the T400

this

If you are going to run the 4l60E REPLACE:

Both sprags with new HD Borg Warners

Install hardened sunshell or beast sunshell. I recommended the later model one that uses a different forward hub and a torrington bearing.

Replace plastic accumulator pistons with aluminum ones

Install corvette servo

install shift kit (transgo orange box at minimum)

The transgo 4l60E-3 will give you the option of full manual control with no computer needed.

With the trans open, take a good look at the 3-4 clutches.

The 400 all the way.
But, you should start off with the right 400.

Find one sitting behind a Buick or a Cadillac from the late 60's. These are easy to spot with there longer tailshaft and BOP bellhousing. Adapters to bolt these "stronger" transmissions to your drive train are easy to find without adding much length. The one that came with my 67 472 handled almost 500lbs in stock form. The same transmission can handle close to 600lbs before you start getting things hot. Working ones can be had for around $100 and are very easy to find if you know where to look.

As a side note if you dig deep enough you may be able to find a mid/late 60's switch pitch torque converter BOP 400. Basically, you have a 2000 low stall and when you nail it the angles change and you have a 3000 or so stall. They are great for launching a 5000lb car. These are usually distinctive by the linkage that going to the carb or the additional wire towards the side of the trans. Pull the pan and look for the extra wire if your in doubt.

Another one to look out for is a 425. This has a 1st with a spur gear instead of a helical. They are stupid tough and most can be found in RV's, buses, 1.5+ ton grain style trucks, etc. The sound of the spur gear is a cool factor in itself. These are getting harder to find so you may want to improve the platform (3rd) once you have one.

Those things are big, heavy, inefficient, and make a lot of heat in the high stall range. Good idea for its day, but not going to perform like a modern converter.

A nice aftermarket converter is going to help it, no matter what trans is selected. 5.3's aren't exactly low end torque monsters. The stock converters can be a real performance killer, especially the stock 4L80e piece.

I would think even a TH350 is a viable option, lighter and less parasitic. Maybe with 2.75:1 first gear installed.

I have a 700R4 going behind my built 6.0, mine is built by KillerB similar to the specs listed above for the 4:60e, with 5 gear planetary also. I hope it holds up, the 700R4 case was needed to interface with my t-case of choice.
