Angry Dana 44 Ford up problem!!!

Bought a Ford Dana 44 hp from a guy on craigslist who knew nothing about the axles. I got em for a good price with a Ford 9 inch rear. Everything looked nice but had an open carrier in the 44 with 5.13 gears.

My problem began as I started to disassemble the hp44 I realized the passenger side is a Chevy knuckle with chromalloy shafts and Yukon super joints. I thought great, except I cannot remove the axle shaft since it is too big for the Chevy knuckle opening. Then I tried to remove the knuckle but it wont let the ball joint studs out far enough to pull out. The Yukon u joint won't press out far enough while in the knuckle to pull the caps off and remove it, as i was going to remove the shafts separately as it was the only option I can think of... someone played a sick joke on me and I am out of ideas....

Am I missing something?!!!

Oh thanks... lol. Trying to refrain from that!! The guy before last put them in somehow or another... I don't want to damage the u joint or shaft as that is very costly! But wouldn't be able to replace the knuckle without separating the u joint and shafts during reassembly if I cut the knuckle off. Which the knuckle has high steer and i would l like to save that!!

sometimes they are very close fit between the hole in the knuckle and the OD of the shaft... Clean any rust or paint off of them and try again, if you have calipers, measure them. Sometimes You need to just get them lined up just right.

Like you said, they got it together somehow.

OR

sell it on GL4x4 for cheap and make it someone elses problem.

Getting Yukon Chromo's through the knuckle opening can be a pain sometimes. Most guys use the die grinder to put four notches in the opening of the knuckle to be able to get the shafts through. That way it is clearanced for future shafts as well.

Or you can grind down the outside of the axle yokes.

Don't grind the axle yokes. Put a small clearance in the knuckle. It's fairly common.

I had to clearance both. It comes out, and goes in. But only in one spot. Has to be lined up perfectly.

Didn't the yukon super joints have needle grease zerks in all the caps?

yes, there is a needle grease zerk on the top of each cap. You can install them after you slide the axle in if they are causing a clearance issue.
