Question Your thoughts on a kids dirt bike.

I am possibly going to score this bike for $200. Says 3rd gear acts up.
I know nothing about repairing that issue.

4 stroke Honda.

Indestructible.

Trans issue should not be a problem for a guy that built a stroker motor with a day-glo green oil pan.

It will be fine. Gear most likely has a chipped tooth.

Or a bent shifter fork.

Get a Honda factory service manual and a clean work area. You may need a crankcase separating tool (pretty cheap at rockymountainatv.com, if you are near me you can borrow mine)to split the cases properly. May as well throw new crank bearings, piston (if needed), rings, timing chain, and valve guide seals while you have it apart. You may also need a $15 flywheel puller.

$250 or so in parts and a good easy weekend project if the transmission issue is just a chipped gear or bent shift fork.

Yes, but that particular design Honda engine is fairly easy to tear down and repair.

A case splitter makes it easier, but I've had good luck just tapping lightly with a rubber mallet. Don't pry with a screwdriver.

Like I said, anybody who built a stroker....

I have an 86 KX 80 I rip around on out at camp and off roads. Just had the transmission rebuilt in my YZ426f and it was just under $900 for parts and labor. I have done them before and they are not to bad as long as you have a flywheel puller and a case splitter but I just don't have the time or ambition to rip apart the case on those things anymore.

$200 is not a bad price for that bike. Getting harder and harder to find in good shape. Would make a nice winter project.

I split my cases without a case splitter.

Shouldn't be an issue. Seems like a good deal at that price. If all else fails, it's a good parts bike.
