To update the thread, we spent a few hours at the Dodge dealer today. Drove a '14 RAM 1500 Express 4x4, Quad Cab, 5.7L and 8 Spd. Every option that he wanted in the Reg. Cab that he is after, but since they don't have any in stock, we drove the nearest comparison.

Wow. The truck drives like a Cadillac and pulls like crazy. Takes some getting used to with the 8 speed, and the engine braking from the cylinder cutoff setup, but a really, really nice truck. Now to be fair, the Chevy he drove was a Z71 so it rode somewhat rougher because of that - but I can't see even a top of the line LTZ coming close to the ride of the Ram.

That said, he was set and ready to find a Reg cab that fit the bill and get it to the dealer, unfortunately Ram is offering almost no incentive on single cab trucks. Spectacular deals on Quad and Crew cabs, but something like $500 in total incentives on a '14 Single cab. The dealer made an alright offer for trade in, and I got them up to a more comfortable trade in price, but we just can't make a deal on a single cab Ram when the quad cabs are so rebated, and right now he really doesn't prefer to drive home with anything but a short wheelbase 4x4.

May go back to Chevy dealer tomorrow and talk some more about the Z71. While I think we both liked the Ram better, the Chevy wasn't a bad truck by any means, and if it comes down to a several thousand dollar difference in out the door price, Chevy it is.

Why in the hell Ram is offering such sharp incentives and limiting it only to Quad and Crew cabs is beyond me.

The Ecodiesel is neat - but not worth the steep price for what he's using it for.

The biggest rebates are on the crew cab. Pickups are no longer just tow rigs. They are daily drivers, family transporters, pull machines, and work trucks with the whole crew on board. They are more universal now.

Chrysler puts peak incentives on the crew cab for maximum exposure on what they feel is the nicest truck setup, the most desirable one. Because the truck improved so drastically, Chrysler wants the attention so they can get a much larger piece of the market. Back to back champs is a big deal.

I can lease out a Ram for well under 300 bucks right now, and it is beyond well equipped. Ram is sailing on the all the awards it has received. Wait until March is over and see all the big numbers they put out. It will be huge.

Yeah, that's pretty well how our dealer explained it too. We talked numbers on quads/crews and the numbers for leasing especially were beyond impressive. Unfortunately not quite good enough to convince my dad to go 4-door, at least not yet.

Also, this is the same principle that pushed Jeep into 4 doors, and the collapse of a marketable Bronco / Ramcharger / K5. I hate to see it!

Ram.

It is much nicer to look at. Truck of the year two years running, kinda speaks for itself.

Most people don't want a two door anything. Not as easy to use, less versatile, and more difficult on resale. The truck market is really competitive.

I am not a pickup driver, but if I was, it would be the 2014 Ram 1500 SLT 4x4 Outdoormans package, 8cyl 8Speed with lux group, comfort group, 20" black wheels, 8.4AN radio, spray liner, crew cab, 6' 4" bed, and a few others, but in white body.

I've gotten away from newer vehicles with high payments. I did that for a short time and I realized quickly I'm way happier playing around with $5k and under trucks for cash- even if I've got to pop the hood on occasion. I typically always buy a single cab, so I can understand where my Dad is coming from.

However, I was surprised he didn't cave and drive the crew cab home, he fell in love driving it.

But at the same time, rebates or not, you're still looking at a $30,000+ debt on wheels, it better be the one you absolutely want.

For sure, it better be a nice truck. When you drive the Ford, the Chevy, and the Ram, there are very noticeable differences. The only thing I wanted to add to the conversation is that the Ram 1500 is very pleasantly surprising. Even the Pentastar 305HP V6 is a story to tell.

Agreed. We wanted to take a 3.6L out for a drive just for fun and to see what the fuss is about, but figured it wouldn't be ethical to ride on the dealers dime just for kicks, he has no intention of going with the 6cyl.

He was (and sort of still is) considering keeping his old truck and instead of buying a new one, buying a Challenger R/T. The dealer let us take out an R/T Challenger which was a nice ride in itself - however it was a 2012 with just over 50k on the odo. New ones are a bit over the budget he's looking to be in.

I think he'd be happier with the new truck. But I'll update this thread when he does decide the route he wants to go.

If this lease price stays close for "real" leases where you get more than 10k miles a year thats hard to pass up.

This sounds like a pretty well loaded truck, is this the one you can get into for $300 a month or less?

For sure. Sick deals on the Ram based on the programs in truck month. Chevy has decent lease deals, Ford not so much. In regards to retail, they are within a few grand of each other when similarly equipped and is more about which truck is better than the other at that point.

The most highly advertised was the $272/mo lease on the '14 RAM 1500 Express Crew Cab 4x4, which was 24 months, $272 due at signing, and 10k a year. However the rebates applied to all trim levels, so a better optioned truck would still lease for an extremely attractive rate.

The one we test drove today stickered at $39xxx, the $272 lease is on an MSRP of $38xxx, and while it was an Express, and not quite an SLT, it was a well optioned one.

Im a ford guy at heart but the ecobust has crap fuel economy, long term durability is still unknown....the 5.0l is a good 6k rpm engine if you take it to the strip, but not the best for towing. Overall the Ford F150 is a great top notch truck but the leases are high. I picked up a 14 Ram 1500 for $220 per month and it is a crew cab big horn with 5.7l hemi and 8 speed trans. Nicest drivingn half ton I have owned. good power, good fuel economy, and tows awesome.

I like my '14 Ram. I looked at the other brands. The interior is way nicer with way mlre storage in the Ram. The exterior has been around a while but I still think it looks good, and the Ramboxes are awesome. The 8 spd shifts smooth and is fantastic so far. 3.92 gears and gettimg around 16 or 17 mpg with a level kit and 35s commutting between Fenton and Pontiac and has great power.
