Default Found - Youth 410 or 20 gauge

Prefer a single shot break away, but will look at all options

This will be for my son who is just starting out with firearms.

I want something for him that he can bird, rabbit, squirrel and white tail with.

I'd love to find a 20 gauge .22 over under.

I have a set of Dana 70's front and rear that I would exchange, or give me a price.

Stay away from the single shot break style if you value your son's shoulder. My youth single shot break away 20 ga kicked way harder than the 12ga semi auto I stepped up to. They're light and kick like mules. My dad finally shot a round of trap with it after seeing all the bruising on my shoulder weekend after weekend. That was the last round shot through that gun. Even a pump is more forgiving. Just a heads up.

I still shot skeet with 20 ga over and under but it had the mass to keep it out of my shoulder. It still kicked harder than the 12ga semi but was tolerable. My youth 20 ga was punishment in comparison. I was 8 or 9 at the time and shot leagues with him until I was 16.

I have a .410 .22 over under

I'll keep my eyes peeled for a good rabbit gun.

FYI, I went from not shooting anything gunpowder charged straight to 12 gauge. My 12 gauge pump kicks less than a 20 gauge break action...

I don't recommend a 12 gauge for rabbits and squirrels though

I don't think he is ready for a 12,

The main thing is to let him hunt White Tail and Rabbits. (so that is what I am setting the gauge fore)
The rule in my house is we eat what we hunt. Venison and Rabbit jerky, is pretty much all the wild game this kid will eat. I haven't started him on the O'possum, or raccoon stew yet.

so, technically, I wouldn't have to eat the crap I kill when I'm hunting for something else living under your roof? Or do you want to amend your statement to we eat what we kill?

I'm confused. I don't follow the "eat what I kill" rule, because I kill flies, spiders, mice, etc..........I live in the woods, and there is a line I wont cross.

anyway, back to looking for a gun for my boy................let me know what you have.

hypothetically, I am hunting ducks, and I kill a crow. I live under your roof, do I have to eat it?

I have an older vintage break away 20 gauge. If I remember correctly it did not kick to bad. It was my first gun so you know it is older. Was used when I got it. I was probably around 12 at that time. I will see if I can find all the pieces and maybe we can get a price we both can live with.

I have an old sears single shot 20ga with very few rounds thru it. Also have a .22 over 20 that kicks much harder though it's not for sale. Savage has the new 22/.410 but the one I saw at Dicks was $400. Which seems to be the going price for the older one as well. If they made the new one in 22/20 I would probably buy it.
