I'm doing a T&E on a Glock 42 on Tuesday, hoping to squeeze a few rounds through the 34 while I'm on the range.

There is also a set of railroad tracks less than a mile away, and about ten years ago there was a drifter who hopped off the train and ended up killing a couple that lived in a farmhouse in the area. Shit does happen, however unlikely you think it would be.

I have fired shotguns and rifles and handguns before...I'm not a complete noob but I don't really know where to start. I think that I want something a bit bigger than a 22 but not super powerful. I would like it to be something that both the wife and I are comfortable with. I don't want to mess with a revolver.

I know enough that I need to go and try some out for myself to find something that physically fits, but does anyone have any suggestions as a starting point? Maybe 4 or 5 to look into? Thx in advance.
Full size HK45.

The HK recoil compensation system coupled with the excellent ergonomics make the pistol pretty much a do all for what you're describing. My wife has tiny hands and whenever I leave for work I ask her what weapon she wants available to her while I'm gone and she wants my full size HK45 Tactical every single time. It's easy for her to rack the slide, simple to operate, damn near infallible for reliability and accurate as hell. It recoils softer than a Beretta M9 9MM too.

If you're ever in the area I'd be more than happy to meet up with you and bring it out for both you and the lady to try out.

Shot the piss out of a Glock 42 yesterday. Fun little gun, even though it stovepiped like a mofo.
I made a 6" plate at 35 yards my bitch with it.

Just got a decent deal on a Sig p238 Lady for the wife on Gunbroker, I'm going to have her go pick up a "part" that I ordered from the shop I had it shipped to and surprise her with it.

Is this real life? S&W Shield No Thumb Safety?

Anybody have any idea where the image could have come from? I just sold my Shield, but I'd buy one of these in a heartbeat.

Remington R51...anybody shot or been able to fondle one yet?

I still want one, fully polished....reminds me of the makarov from the movie "the island", which I've always wanted. I think a customized r51 would be a better option...

I would buy one as well. I prefer the feel of the shield over my XDs but the safety kills it for me

Put 150 rounds through one a while back, didn't really like much about it. Had the opportunity to purchase it, left it there.

I've been reading some more recent reviews, and they don't seem to be quite as positive as the early ones with Remington's test guns...I guess their production pistols aren't up to par with the test units they had out.

R51s seem to be having issues. One guy bought both we had come in, and he brought both back with major jam issues. Feeding, stove pipe, and return to battery issues.

Return to battery/failure to feed were the main issues that the one I played with had. Seems that the low powered recoil spring wasn't always enough to get the rounds up the ramp and into the chamber.

It also tore my hand into a bloody mess with slide bite...
