I have a question about target shooting. My in laws live about 20 minutes north of Lapeer. Can I target shoot on their property legally with my rifle? I practice with my handguns there quite often. Plenty of acreage, burm built up, etc.

As far as the DNR, the centerfire rifle restriction applies from 5 days before (Nov. 10) and through firearm deer season (end of November). Rimfire is OK during this time to take small game such as coyote, raccoon, etc. https://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,4570,...1578--,00.html

Outside of the dates listed above, target practice should be fine as long as there's not a local ordinance, which is unlikely in a rural area.

Bingo.

As long as you follow the common sense rules you shouldn't have a problem. Don't be firing towards a road way, buildings, etc.

As far as I know, the rifle restriction only applies during deer season itself. You can use centerfire for varmint hunting outside of deer season across the entire state, only during daylight of course.

Thank you very much for the info. Gotta keep it legal, and without trouble.
I'm not a hunter, but target shoot a lot. I'd like to get started hunting this year though.

About 1 of every 22 people in Michigan have a concealed pistol license.

Still not enough. I found a free class here in WI for mine that I'll be taking in about 2 weeks. Actually here all you need is a hunters safety certificate, but I want my wife to get her cpl and she never went through hunters safety

I need to be one of those 22.

I don't even own a pistol.

The gun grabbers might be uncomfortable if that realized that almost anytime they go out in public, someone in their vicinity is armed.

I'm very curious about how many people that have a carry permit actually carry all the time. I have an unfortunate feeling that it's quite a bit lower that we would like it to be.

For me it depends on the definition of carry. (yes I know the legal definition of carrying) I always have a loaded weapon in my vehicle so that makes my number fairly high. But I only carry it on my person when I feel the need, which is probably less than 50% of the time, not including being at home or work.

I carry everywhere I'm legally allowed to, every day. I spend most of my day south of 8 mile, but also carry at home. When I crack a beer, my pistol goes in the safe.
I do think that a lot of people get the permit and carry fashionably. You can't schedule when bad stuff happens. Look at the party store at 14/Harper and Lakeside mall a week ago.

I'm experimenting with holsters and need to get a good Cary belt and then I will be like Rob the plumber and carry everywhere I can and have a micro safe in my car for when I can't.

That's why I always have one in my vehicle. When I stop for gas, I make a determination of leaving it in the vehicle (door open) within reach or pocketing it. I will almost always pocket it if I am going in the store.

I've got a sweet mini safe in my van too. If I meet up with someone and have a beer with lunch, it's got a happy hiding place.

Definitely. I don't smoke that much either. I just think it should be legal and taxed.
