Whatever works for you, but I think as a blanket statement, that is completely false. An AR is a fantastic HD weapon...

Both have their place and a pistol is definitely better for answering the door.

I live by the rule that if I don't know who's on the other side of the door, I don't answer it.

You must not have kids ? About a month ago my daughters friends mother was beating on our door at 1 am . She found her daughter car in a bar parking lot when she said she was staying at our house. She wasn't going away without a answer and I can say I wouldn't either.
She later commented on how bright my light was.

This, anyone who would needs to see me, that I want to see has my cell phone #. They also know not to show up at my house unannounced.

I used to practice the same thing but my kids keep finding ways to break this rule. You never know if the knocking is about your kids or their friends .
The old days you would just look up a number .

I love old school hardware. I think I must have one similar to it.

Blanket statement yes, but in a small home it's no bueno. Way too long.

Not to mention, I couldn't imagine lighting off a 5.56 round indoors. My ear drums pound just thinking about it.

I don't have a problem with my hands but it can get annoying when carrying it.

I still disagree, I have a small home, and my AR works fine for what I would need to do with it.

As far as shooting the rifle indoors, yeah, it's gonna do some permanent damage.

I wouldnt think a pistol indoors would be any better for your ears ? Ive been in the car port at the range when a pistol has been fired with my muffs half on. It puts a nice ring in the ears.

Depends on the caliber as much as anything. I wouldn't want to touch off a 357 mag without hearing protection regardless of whether it was indoors or out
