Default hood exhaust

Do you guys know anything about putting exhaust through the hood? My buddy wants to put it through his hood. I heard you can just flip the headers upside down cut them and just weld some exhaust pipe on it to bring it through the hood.. is this true? any indo would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
