Default Project "Half Ton" (96 K1500)

Decided I wanted to create a project thread. My truck is a 96 K1500. I've had for almost 5 years now, which makes me wish I would've started this when I first bought it. The truck has gone through many modifications through the years to the point now where it's pretty a off-road only truck. I'm going to start from when I first got it, but I'll try not to make it to boring.

So this is what truck looked like the day I bought her. It quickly got the mods that any 19-20 year old would do including LED taillights, window tint, aftermarket stereo, roll in bedliner.
Few months went buy and my buddy decided to straight axle his truck and sold me his IFS lift with his axles that had 4.56 gears. So the lifting process began.first came the body lift.
Quickly after the body lift I bought my wheels and tires which were 35" MTZ's on black 15" Mickey Thompson wheels. We did the suspension lift at my cousins house since he had a hoist and the experience of doing tons of lift kits. So the fun began.
Lift went on smoothly and truck looked awesome!
Month after lift was put on I took truck to the dunes for the first time. Previously I had only been to dunes as a kid with my parents. Dunes trip went smooth and truck went home in one piece with only some tire rubbage damage.
Truck stayed the same for a couple years with only upgrades being aftermarket headlight assembly and park lights. Also added HID headlights and a toolbox in the bed. A few more dunes trips and some bogging!
Then the Fourth of July dunes trip in 2012 came along and the old 350 decided she'd had enough
So it got replaced with a jasper 350. Looking back I wish I would've did something different motor wise but it was my DD at the time and had to get it back running quickly.

Shortly after new motor I bought a 14 bolt 6 lug semi floater for the rear and put an Eaton electric locker in it. Other than that no upgrades happened til summer of 2013. I had bought my current DD (07 classic Duramax) early in 2013 so i decided to do some slightly bigger mods to the Half Ton. First I added 14 bolt full floater to the rear. Which landed me in the goofy set up as it's currently still in, having a 1 ton rear and half ton front and obviously two different lug patterns. I bought 35" Boggers for the rear on 8 lug rims and kept the MTZ's up front. I also swapped out the 4l60 for a turbo 400 with a Transbrake built to handle 1000hp. As far as any motor upgrades I added a Zex nitrous kit. All my upgrades were done in time for Labor Day 2013 dunes trip, where I had a great time til the fuel line for nitrous kit loosened and leaked fuel on headers. FIRE!!!! Luckily fire was put out with only damage being some wiring and I drove the Duramax in the dunes the rest of the weekend.

Once I got home I fixed wiring and took truck to a couple mud bogs but was getting burned out on the 350. Plus the truck is only on 35s not much of a bogger anyhow lol. So in January 2014 I bought my cousins motor off him which is what I'm currently running. Motor is a 509 BBC 13:1 650 to 700 hp. Motor runs awesome. With the addition of this came a lot of work converting truck over to a carbureted motor, electric fans, bigger radiator, fuel cell, steel braided lines, etc. Only problem was with the addition off the long tube headers I couldn't fit my front driveshaft in because the drivers side header is resting on the axle yoke. This didn't bother me too much since the half ton IFS front end probably wouldn't of took 700hp to well.

Took truck to dunes in May and it was a blast actually having some real power. Even in 2 wheel drive the truck ripped!

So now we are up to present time. As I type this the truck sits in storage barn at my work out of gas and needing some work.

Future plans for truck is going to be a 4 link setup. I already have a Dana 60 for the front, just need to start collecting parts and ideas for the rest of the build.

In the meantime I've beenhaving issues with my transmission. During May dunes trip the truck had tons of power in first gear but would die down in second and could never get high in the rpms in second or third gears. Once I got back I sent torque converter back to Coan and and did have some damage that they repaired. After reinstalling converter truck is still a doing the same as it did at the dunes. So this is next on the agenda...

It does.....I actually thought it was more like 750, but the owner would know better than me. It was built and run in a monster mud truck on 44" boggers for a little while before he bought it, the thing rips. But since all you ever do is act like a bitter old twat, I guess it really doesn't matter if you believe it or not.

I look forward to the rest of the build Curtis. The 4 link should make this thing work awesome.

Nice truck. How much lift are you proposing this thing to achieve?

Originally I was going to keep it fairly low but now I'm wanting to run 40s and have room for suspension travel and such. I don't have a number in inches of lift. Just depends on how i do my 4 link setup.

What are your plans for steering? If you keep it nice and low, the fenders can be cut a little, and you can get the bigger rubber in there too.
