Default Programmer or Chip? Worth it in the long Run?

Ok, here's the deal: I'm thinking about buying a chip or programmer to put on the 'ol 7.3(2002 f250 4wd ecsb) to try an get some extra mpg's. I have a bunch of questions; and haven't come up with many answers because it seems everyone is a salesman. First off, I could care less what adds the most hp; I don't give a fukc about "rolling coal" and I don't own a flat billed hat so that's out.
I want increased economy/driveability. My concerns are with my transmission. I want a product that will not harm it; or cause it undue stress(normal driving and towing conditions). So will a programmer or chip be best for changing the shift points to work with the change in motor operation?? Second concern is I'm already averaging around 15-17mpg(hand calculated average of the last 6 tanks of fuel) Is dropping the $300-$500 on computer alteration really going to make a big enough difference to save me money later on? Which product would be best for the tranny? Thanks in advance!

Oh, and I already have my tow mirrors at full extension, a dune flag and I can't do stacks because of my tool box.

Stay away from any of the canned tunes. The best chip for a 7.3 would be the ts 6 position. You can change it on the flym and there's dozens of tuners that can burn you custom tunes. They do Have trans programming.

I agree.....get with someone like DP-Tuner, have a chip done with a econo program and maybe a tow program. If you gain 1 mpg it should pay for itself in roughly 20-25k. I know with DP-tuner....if you want a shift point changed or shift pressure changed you can send the chip back and have it changed or with the F6 chip it can be done over the net. I installed my Dp-Tuner at 70K and the truck now has 230K on it.....mostly run in the 80hp econco tune.

I have the Edge CTS and love it. It has a tow mode that changes the trans tune also for better towing. I actually drive almost all the time in tow mode because the shifts feel better, and the trans temps are lower than in stock form when not towing. I have gone over the Rocky Mountains with a 38 foot 5th wheel with it and it was great.

It doesn't matter what you do, it will take a while to make your money back unless you are going to drive a whole lot. Took me about 2 years to break even with fuel savings but I did more than just the tuner and I also took a trip to California and one to Key West. I did it more for the extras for towing and the addition of all the built in gauges like trans temp and all that.

I am going to make a few phone calls tomorrow. Probably call dp, ts and beans. If anyone has the six position chip, which tunes would you recommend? Thanks again

What didn't you like about the dp? Seems to be the one most guys on powerstroke.org are recommending.

The shifting absolutely sucked. Jody was hard to get ahold of. Kinda generally didn't care attitude. Don't know what was happnin in his life so can't comment to much on that. In all honesty the canned edge pulled just as hard. I also didn't like the fact that the f6 was exclusive to him. So I couldn't send it to anyone else at least at the time. I've ridden in trucks with the tony wild man tunes and it seemed great. Also the throttle on the do sucked. It was like the truck hit wot at about 1/2-3/4 past that it didn't pull any different. I hear that's a common do thing.

That's what I figured.

I'll checkout wildman for sure. I don't want shitty shifting. This truck is going to see alot of miles, and soon as summer hits it's going to get a good workout everyday. So I want/need it to be as reliable as possible; and have some cool factor for when I'm just driving.

I run a dp and like the 80 econo tune when the truck is unloaded. The 60 towing is great to get a loaded equipment trailer moving quickly. At first I thought I might have an hpop or injectors getting weak but untill the motor is at temp the econo tune seams more sluggish than stock till the motor is at temp... I have been meaning to call Jody about it. Since it has been like this for two years I think a weak injector or hpop would have got worse.
