250x or 300ex?

Looking to buy either one.

Late 80's 250x...there's a ton of them out there, quite a few that are very clean.

300ex. zillions of them also

I don't need the reverse or electric start of the 300ex. Not considering age and considering both would be clean and well maintained, which would be the best way to go?

Both are about equal minus the points you mention. Displacement wise, they're closer than the model names indicate.

Assuming both were both well maintained, I'd get the one which was most original but is used regularly (gummed up parts are never fun). It will most likely continue being the most maintenance free.

300ex sucks when battery dies and there is no back up start option, seems like every year I was putting a new battery in it, they didn't last long with the bouncing and abuse it took,

I have had several of both in the past. I liked the 300 more. Electric start was not a big deal, till I had it. 250x and 300ex both have reverse. I went to a 400ex and it was not as fun to just mess around on (even though it was way faster), and I missed reverse. I hope to pick up another 300 sometime in the future.
Hay, look at me... I have a signature.....
