the guy buying them wants them for his delta grinder.

You could use them for grinding any sort of shaft. If it was longer I'd probably keep it around for truing arrows or checking camshafts. I don't think it's quite long enough for that.

It's for whatever you want!

Bench centers are typically used for checking the straightness of a cylindrical part. Put it between centers and you can see how much runout (bow) it has by using anything from crude measurements to precision indicators. To imagine checking runout, think of the shape of a spinning jump rope.

Typically they are not used for grinding because the rotating part is not driven. That's what a lathe does for you.

If he backs out, I may be interested.

I'll let you know, but judging by his level of excitement, I doubt he will back out. He is going as far as paypal'ing me the cash before he picks up this weekend.
