Default Putting a tv over the fireplace?

Good or bad? I have a wood burning fireplace insert. Not sure how much we will actually have a fire.

It depends how well your chimney vents. Mine lets some smoke out of the front of the fireplace a little with pressure changes.

Mounted my grandpa's 40" over his fireplace, nothing underneath it; never had any issues. I thought that it would get to hot when he had a fire but it never gets hot at all; the tv stays close to the wall so the heat never actually gets to it from the front of the fireplace. Just like Rob said, as long as your chimney vents well (the wall doesn't get hot) you should be fine

Schweeb just did this. Electricians installed wall outlet, fished speaker wires, and mounted his 60" TV above his wood burning fireplace.
Worst decision he ever made.
Melted wires and ruined his new tv.

Boo! We just moved here and have not used it yet. I need to get somebody here to check it out first. Looks to have a metal tube as the vent.

You'll probably be fine with the B vent. The wall shouldn't get hot at all unlike a masonry chimney. As long as the smoke doesn't get out, and the wall stays fairly cool, you're good.

We moved ours to a corner, once I switch the tv out for a 50" the mount will hidden. We just moved in so I have not built the shelves for the cable box etc yet.

Our old house had a 46" above it for 5 years with no problem and our current had had a 60" above it with no problem.

Reclined in the man chair is the perfect TV watching angle.

My 51 inch over the fireplace has not been a problem in the 2 years its been there. Tho we don't use the fire place very often, mostly holidays.

This seems to be more of an issue than the heat.

are we talknig a legit fireplace in which case you will be mounting the TV to a brick that can conduct heat from the chimney? Or are we talking a wood burning insert with an insulated chimney?

Wood burning insert. No bricks. Chimney pipe looks to be boxed in with drywall.

I'm sitting in my living room now and looked up above the fireplace from the chair sitting perpendicular...I think it would suck to have to look up at an angle at that location. In contrast out TV is on a stand at eye level and I can see it from everyplace in the room. I suppose if you only have a couch directly in front of the fireplace you will be OK.
