Default FC170 "Patina Rod" (of sorts)? Yay or Nay?

The "canvas"? A 1961 (or so it appears based on the VIN) Jeep FC170. It's rough, but here's what I'm thinking...
  • Repair the floors in the cab and neutralize exterior rust as much as possible. Prep/paint the interior nicely, but retain the existing exterior paint scheme/patina, rust, etc.
  • Mount cab on late-model frame/axles...potentially dually rear axle, all painted satin black (clean).
  • Custom bumpers. The front may potentially have extra tubing work to pay homage to its former plowing glory.
  • Build flatbed on the back. Original bed is shot, so repair is not an option.
  • Install late-model, sub-100K mile Jeep 4.0L/AW4/NP-231 (I already own this driveline, and don't have the budget to consider other options, nor do I want to. It runs GREAT!).
  • Tire size? No idea yet.
  • Must be built with a very low budget.

Spew forth feedback and/or ideas.

I dig it, and wouldn't take much to make a box that resembles that one.

Yay

Sounds great so far. Are you going with Cherokee axles/Tj, (cutting off the coil front brackets and weld leaf spring pads?) or going with something a bit beefier? Ford d44 w/9" rear? or 8 lug? Maybe look for a military trailer and use it for the bed?

If you go flatbed, install non-removable stake sides so you don't end up in a gray area on commercial vs personal plates.

Kim, I'm currently looking at a Ford E350 cab & chassis dually rear. The rear will dictate the matching front.

Explain, if you would, BlooMule. I don't think I want stake sides, as I would get more utility (personal use) out of a flatbed. Why would questions about commercial use come into play?

Never mind. I just looked it up here:

http://www.michigan.gov/sos/0,1607,7...9800--,00.html

Apparently a private owner can have a stake truck without having to have USDOT numbers.

My info was out of date. I had put a flat bed on a 72 Chevy 1/2 ton, and got a ticket for not having a GVW plate. All I had to do was screw stake sides on it (non-removable- one screw per stake qualified since a tool was required to remove) and I was good to go. Now that I think of it, this was 25 years ago. Damn, thank you for making me feel old!

My vote is E-350 351W (turbo'd) or powerstroke donor chassis, 2wd, with slicks.

Regardless, this will not be a cheap build. You can find a JK rolling frame, add to the wheelbase and put air bags in the rear coils for any extra load. Put your engine/trans/t-case in and see what you will need to do with the doghouse to access everything.

You can look at the new concept Jeep FC to see how they got the steering to work.

Rebuild the box
You could shorten the length of it between the cab and wheel well to make it the proper length for a different chassis

...except you, woohaw. You already know I have zero respect for you, and your opinion. I could even look past your dickish ways if you had any fabrication/hands-on build credibility, but you really don't.
