Have a 15k Mile Marker winch with a steel line... I want to switch it to 30k synthetic rope... I was just thinking of just smoothing out all the rough edges to make it very smooth and give it a try... Anyone try it? Tips?
If you intend to use the full 15,000# capacity of the winch, I would recommend 1/2" line. I broke a 5/16" line on a straight line pull with a 9500# winch. I now run 3/8".
The above is good advise, but I would add that I personally would run 75-80ft on the drum and the rest of the 150ft as a double looped extension. There have been numerous occasions where all that cable/rope on the drum is a major PITA.
Plus with rope if there is a lot of it on a winch and it is not spooled perfectly tight it will dig into itself pretty bad making it very hard to unspool in the future.
