I thought also wanted it?

And as a left handed person I'm offended by that.

We should all want separation of church and state, the idea was to prevent a state endorsed church.

This way Obie can't make Islam the official religion of the US. No, I do not care whether Obama is a muslim

Well now you and I are even.

I think we all want it within the realms of what the founding fathers wanted. I just figured it was worth some discussion......... especially since I looked it up on about 4 different sites before I posted it.

It could be worthy of discussion. Not many facts to be researched, it tends to be a topic that is mostly opinions. And it really isn't so much right vs. left as it is religious vs. non religious.

Religious people do not want the government telling them how to practice this religion, non religious people to not want to see the government run based on religion. The compromise is to keep them separated.

My thoughts when I read the part of the first amendment that deals with religion:

Quote:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;
Is that many people have become too fixated with the first part, and forgotten about the second part.

Preach it!

There are a good number of documents from churches (mostly letters) that indicate that the early Church in America wanted separation of Church and state to protect the church from becoming corrupt like it was in Europe. It seemed to work for a little while.

The powers that be want the separation of church and state, they why do they want help from the church to sell a bad law to the American people?

I don't see a problem with churches helping their members to understand and take advantage of new laws and government programs.

If it's ok to go this direction, then I suppose it would be ok for the information to flow the other way, say a government body informing people about church mass times and what services the church offers?

No, the first amendment does not work both ways. Churches are free to endorse and cooperate with the government, or oppose it if it chooses to. The government can not endorse or oppose a religion.

No, you're comparison doesn't make sense. I would hope that you would understand why.

edit: you're using Aberlogic. I think I will trademark that term.

Not entirely true. If a church claims to be a non-profit they aren't suppose to use the pulpit to talk about politics. There was a 'strike' in a sort of sense a couple years ago where a group of pastors broke this rule because they didn't think it was constitutionally sound. They put thier church at risk of being denied or revoked thier non-profit standing.
