Another Shock Tuning Question

Anyone have a link to a writeup or article that can help me tune/adjust my own shocks?

I'm running Bilstein 7100 right now and I want to play with them a bit, but I'm completely ignorant.

I've watched a video how to take them apart and get to the valving shims (so now I'm an expert!), but I want to know what changes where effect what. I want a really detailed, boring, long read!

?

Thanks,

Lucas

I've got about 6 pages of random peoples knowledge saved on the subject....nothing certified.

A good book? Bilstein specific. I'm going to swap lower rate coils in over the winter but I want to research my shock tuning for when I'm ready to do some adjustments.

Probably wrong site to ask shock tuning questions.... anyone have some good advice on the jumps to take when adjusting? 5% 25%....? Finally got a nitrogen tank, just need to get my hands on the regulators and hose.

What kind of rig? What type of terrain are you wanting to set it up for? What spring rates are you running right now?

What is your setup doing right now that you don't like? What is your setup not doing that you want it to do?

Im looking for general info on if you encounter this, chances are doing this will help. I need to swap my rear coils to lower the rear end about 1.5 inches, or move my front mounts with my current front coils up about an inch (I built them to be adjustable). General trail riding is my goal, fast trail riding. Its a TJ stretched with user designed and built 3 link front, triangulated 4 link rear. I made a custom aluminum fuel cell mounted just in front of the rear axle, so I know my rear is lighter than normal, front is probably lighter with more unsprung weight than stock.

Once I have the coils set, I want to video tape it over a variety of terrain including single bumps at different speeds. When I know what is really going on, I want to have a good idea what I need to start playing with.

Right now with one big run complete with my build the only thing I know is that it rides rough at lower speeds, but handles big hits great; initial hit it soaks up, but second and third in quick succession it bucks. So, seat of my pants tells me I need to lower my rebound and possibly low speed compression. But I want to get some video of it before I touch it in case front is different, etc...

E-shocks.com is local, but not that great when it comes to taking an order over the phone. I ended up getting the shims for the front, but not back. The orings didnt get ordered and the fill tool didn't come with what he told me it would include. The emailed order confirmation I asked for never came and parts shipped two days later than promised.

Thanks for the pm's guys.

Anyone ever have a shock with the wrong valving inside a new marked shock? I had one side with a thicker shim than the chart shows it should have installed.... these were ordered shocks, new in a sealed box, no marks on dust cap etc...

With no ID on the shims I suppose it can happen easily enough. Was only a .3 instead of a. 4 thick.

I was looking for a detailed writeup of how specific changes effect handling and how changing thicknesses in certain areas of the shim pack effect its performance / high, low and medium bla bla bla. I ended up with a few phone numbers and a few pointers and I've got some emails out.
