I can't remember the exact wording of the signs, but in Ohio there was always a sign that had me wondering if I needed to obey the slower speed limit.

something to the effect of if your vehicle weighs X empty 55, where the speed limit was 60 for normal passenger cars....I'll have to look at it next time I am driving through that wonderful state.

So my truck with a pop up truck camper has to stop in WI? I towed a 38 foot 5th wheel through WI headed south and then again headed north. Twice. Never stopped at a weigh station. Is that only for something oversize?

The one he asked about is older than my brothers, not as well kept as my brothers.

For permits you will be better to get ahold if a permit service, give jet permits a call, 414-425-2911 Ask for Jill. they will be able to pull your permit for you. As for signage u will need a wide load sign front arm rear if u r legal weight. If u r overweight u will need oversize signs. U will also need 6 orange flags two at extreme front and rear of vehicle and two at widest point of the boat.

Wrong... On everything. I know this because I pulled my own permits. 4 flags are all that were required, for both states. 2 for the front of the Tow vehicle, and 2 for the rear of the towed unit. Also, the state dictates what banners are needed. This is decided through a 15pt check list. The banner sinage will be spelled out on the permit conditions sheet. Since I was under the 10 foot OAW no banners were needed. Thanks for trying to help, but make sure you have correct information before you put it out there as truth.

Truth. Part of the point of having this thread is that if people are looking in the future, they may have some point of reference if they decide to do it themselves.

Once I learned the system that (what looks like) most states use, I would be sick if I had actually paid somebody to do it for me.... especially if it was over like 20-30 bucks per state. Are there more confusing permits/loads? Sure, but from the depth that I got into it, I now would not be intimidated to do it myself.

I did find that the DOTs that I called were more than willing to help, walk through, email ect anything that I needed. They were more appreciative that a private party was more interested in being legal, than ignorant of the transportation laws, so they did any and everything they could to help me get me permits set.
