Default Negotiating for a couch?

Anyone have any good tips? Going to buy a new sectional for the new house I think. Frankly I tend to suck at negotiation, mostly when my wife is there as she always falls in love and that takes any leverage I have away. I plan to have her look at it and then not have her there for the negotiation later on a different day.

They are having a 'sale' and the configuration we need is a 'special order' because we need it flipped from the way they have it displayed. I have tried to find one in stock the dimensions we need and everyone has the 'long' side wrong for our living room configuration.

Two different times we shopped at Art Van I got stuck with a salesman that wouldn't budge. Both times I found a way to talk to the manager and got a better deal.

Know this, the stain protect-ant that they sell is the highest commission for a salesman so they will not throw it in for free. If you have the ability to pick it up, you can sometimes negotiate down because they offer "free" delivery.

Good luck.

Seriously though, you might have a harder time getting a discount since you have to special order it. Try knocking off 15% and have them pay for tax. Let him talk to the manager, if he doesn't budge or not much, then do what Whiterhino suggested. Go directly to the manager.

I don't know where you're looking to buy, but I've found that family owned stores are more likely to deal than others.

Right now Godwins has had the best price, but they don't deal there too much on the popular models. Paying cash they knock off the sales tax.

We just bought an awesome sectional from american freight. Its big and comfy. Three recliners, chase lounge, cup holders. Less than 2000.

Idk. Different selection than all the other stores and better prices. Its like a wholesale place. The couch is awesome though. Had it for about 6-7 months so far and its great. Going to Gardner white and art van came up with very similar products to each other. Found an american freight in Lansing and looked around and loved the couch.

I've seen American Freight driving through Ohio, and just kinda blew it off as something like Value City. Interested in knowing how good the stuff is that they sell.

You may have gotten lucky.

I started typing in the store name in google and it wanted to search for complaints and ripoff report. Anyway, it seems like there are a lot of unsatisfied customers and their BBB report is iffy as well. At least they only sell American made furniture.

You can get a Lay-Z-Boy sectional at Godwins for that price. The one I want is $100 more if I could use the floor configuration they have in stock. $2200 if I have to order it.

I'm sticking to American made, and trying to keep it to Lay-Z-Boy. We like the way they sit and they seem to last for us.

We bought a new sectional, settled on gardner white (surprisingly holding up). Priced the same exact setup at the new place in auburn hills, said he was at the rock bottom price, free delivery, blah blah. Walked into the gardner white in waterford and they were $300 cheaper.

Even if it is the same company, price around to the competing stores.

Waterford is full of hillbillies. They knew what kind of town they opened the GW in, so they priced accordingly.
