Default Printer Reccomendations

All In One printer puked tonight at the house. Looking at picking one up tomorrow.

I print regular home stuff, every now and then a couple things of 4x6's and full size pictures. I don't fax anything. Wireless connectivity preferred.

Suggestions? Ready, set, go!

If you do a lot of b&w printing, go laser. Toner lasts for a few thousand pages for not much more than ink that lasts a few hundred. If you can swing it, get a color laser, it will save you money in the long run.

My inkjets are always plugged up or dry since I don't print color often.

As far as brands go, I've had decent luck with HP, Brother, and Canon. Check the page yield per color cartridge, sometimes you only get about a hundred pages out of a cartridge.

Check duty cycle- a printer that has a duty cycle of 200 pages per month will probably be junk after the cartridges are replace a few times. My HP LaserJet 1020 is good for 8,000 single side pages per month.

BTW, most of my pics are on my phone, and that's how I show them to people or just email them. If I am planning to take pictures I want prints from, I use my trust old Canon AE-1 35mm. Last 'photo printer' I had was the Kodak that used the paper/ink combo cartridge- it made for some damn nice photos, but pricey as hell at close to $1.00 per print.

I have an HP 6500... Per customer service rep that I spoke with last week it has a duty cycle of 3,000 pages a month. I've had it for 5 years. TOTAL page count for he life of the machine is 597. After some trouble shooting, it was declared that it had a carriage failure. Piece. Of. Shit.

Seriously, you did not use it enough.

I have an ancient Brother HL1440 that just keeps chugging along. It sat in my closet for 5 years when I got a wild hair up my ass and spent a couple hundred on a wireless HP all in one. Didn't use it enough and now one of the black inkjets is fucked, pictures come out washed out. Works good enough for what I need to do. Most of my printing is text anyway so the lasers get top billing.

The HP 1020 I just got at Gibraltar Trade Center from a guy under the canopy. $25 for the printer with a full toner cart, and a new spare toner cart. It's not the greatest, but fairly compact for a laser and will likely be my new 'road printer'.

Inkjets are pretty much disposable anyway. Some of them it's cheaper to toss em out when the ink runs out because the ink carts cost more than the printer!

I picked up an HP photosmart 5520 a few weeks ago for $90. The wireless works well anywhere in the house from laptop, tablet, and phone. I haven't tried printing photos but am happy with the color and b&w prints it's done. One consideration is choosing this printer was the cost of ink. The cartridges are way cheaper than they are for my older hp all-in-one.

I never use my printers enough and the jets get clogged. I need to get a laser jet one of these days.

With the cost of ink cartridges I always found it cheaper to send photos to a cvs or Costco to get printed for a few cents.

Dingdingding! That's a great idea! Trudging out to CVS might be a bit inconvenient perhaps, but if you don't print at least a couple times a week, inkjets just crap out on you.

We have this printer too.
I use it a lot! Ink is cheap and it prints great color.
One of the things I like most about it is the ability to print from remote locations.

We always had a laser printer, but I would simply consider avoiding "photo" printers of any brand. Photo quality ink tends to clog if the printer isn't used regularly enough. A large part of that is due to the fact that photo ink tends to be of a fast drying variety. That is so the photo can be handled sooner, after having all that ink applied.

We have an HP Officejet 8000, which is a straight up printer with networking. No multifunction features like fax and copier to break. It is discontinued now, but it has been a great printer and kickin' for 3 years; looks like the 8100 replaced it. The ink tanks are huge. The starter ink lasted a year and the HP replacement carts are a higher capacity (that's typical.) We've just started on the 2nd set of replacement ink carts. We don't print much or often, yet no clogging issues. I installed an HP Photosmart driver to get better photo printing performance out of it (more calibration options), but since it does have business oriented ink, you do have to handle the photos carefully until the ink dries. It printed fine with the stock driver, but prints were darker than on screen.

FWIW, I figured the higher upfront cost of the printer would save us money in the long run due to the higher ink capacity. I compared the ink carts to an HP Photosmart Premium, and the XL carts for my printer provide 2.75 times as many prints per ink cart at approx. the same price. And the duty cycle of the Officejet 8000 is substantially higher; 15,000 pages per month vs. 2,500 for that Photosmart I mentioned earlier. Supply cost is near laserjet territory for B&W prints.

We rarely print photos. It's usually that one off for a school craft project. I have done a couple nice prints, but it is difficult to calibrate everything and get a pro looking print. It's very worthwhile to simply have a lab print your photos. Even the worst lab will have equipment that is better calibrated than your stuff and most likely apply some kind of color correction.

If you never need color outside of photo printing, then a laser printer is a wise choice. Our family, with a couple young kids, wanted the ability to print colorful things; mostly charts, certificates, goofy crap....

I've had good luck with HP. Can't say anything for other brands.

HP office line

I've got an officejet 9800, must be near 10 years old going strong, decent ink cartridge life.

I've bought several consumer models for the wife to use and they all either stop working or chew through ink like crazy.
I've had several other people state the same thing about theirs.

That's probably true, however, if you haven't calibrated your monitor, it could be also that your screen is not showing true colors.

The ONLY thing kodak has going for it is cheap ink, but the printer will likely die before the ink is used up anyway.
