Default 90 318 black smoke, runs rich....

My grandpa has a 90 with a 318. He was pulling his boat home from up north a few weeks ago and the truck started using fuel like crazy. 1/4 tank in about 20 miles.

He got it home and did the regular plugs, cap, and rotor thing, but it's blowing black smoke out the tail and running rough, falling on it's face at WOT.

I went down to his house tonight for a few hours to help. No codes, TPS tested fine, fuel pressure reg is fine, timing is fine, etc...

The injectors don't have a nice mechanical click and they are just dumping fuel into the TB.

Any ideas for him? I am not sure if a bad o2 sensor will cause the PCM to just dump fuel... but I should have tested it.

clogged cat? .. causing sensor to dump fuel? ..

ok now for a real answer check the map sensor. i dont think those injestors have as much of a click being that they are on four times as long as many newer multi ports. i dont see it being horibly far out if it still runs but it sounds like youve check most of the likely stuff. did you by any chance check back pressure in the exhaust(clogged cat)? if thats the case you can get a no more cat pipe from auto value. i think i got mine from a 78 1 ton heavy duty style cuz cats just plain cost a lot.

put a o2 sensor on it. on the early chrysler fuel injection systems the o2 sensor will stick in a in range lean condition and cause it to run rich. because it's an in range failure it won't set a code. with out seeing the data on a scan tool I can't say for sure but i've seen it happen a lot in the 17 years that i've been doing this.

That was the problem. Clogged cat lead to a burned out O2 sensor. I couldn't believe how rich that O2 made it.
