Question 2 stroke engines

I picked up a Honda Odyssey about a month ago. It had a scorched piston in it. I had it bored and was running it around quite abit. I am on the first tank of gas thru the rebuild. Went to start it last night and got nothing but a sore shoulder. I peeled the head off and the jug still looks to be in good shape unlike the previous time. How common is it for the rings to stick to the piston?. I haven't had my gauge on it yet but it does feel like it has low compression I drizzled some trans fluid onto the pistion and let it sit over night. First pull this morning it popped but then died. Any suggested steps before I tear it apart again? It has spark and a wet plug after a few pulls.

Did you run oil mixed in the gas at a slightly heavier amount for the first tank?

*edit - I also like to keep a squirt can of race gas around to help start some stubborn engines, I use it instead of either.

It came with a full tank when I got it. Not sure what mix it had. it was low enough yesterday that I thought it may have been below the pick up so I mixed some 40:1 and filled the tank. The 2 stroke world is new to me but I know as long as I have fuel air spark and compression it should run.

After I had a few of my sled engines rebuilt, my motor guy would have me run extra oil in the tank just for the first, on top of the oil injection, it was extra smokey. Then he said to not hold it wide open for the first little while, then only hold wide open for no more than 2 seconds after the first tank and to always vary the throttle, and to put about 500 miles on it, then you can beat the shit out of it. Everyone will say something different, this is what was told to me and ive never had a problem when I followed it. Also lots of 2 strokes that run premix are also very picky on the correct ratio. I always use a ratio right. Have you checked the compression with a gauge yet?

Maybe the reson it blew up the first time is becasue it was mixed to light or straight gas?

I think it blew up after a nut was lost from the head. All the scoring was directly under the missing hardware at the exhaust port. It basically melted the aluminum and caused it to stick the rings, and left some on the jug. I used muriatic acid to dissolve the aluminum before I decided to have it bored out

Have you done a compression check? whats the results, wet and dry?

No matter what the PO says, always do a plug reading as soon as you buy it. There are a lot of really dumb people who own ORV's who think they know how to tune a carb. Especially with it being freshly rebuilt, The carb needs to be adjusted.

I'd almost put money on the carb being too lean. That with some questionable gas/oil and you're re ringing it.

other times to do a plug reading:

season changes. If it's snowing and it was warm the last time you checked (or vice versa), look at the plug. Any tune up, reed chages, re ring, porting, exhaust, air filter, or rebuild work. If you switch brand of 2 stroke oil, check the plug.

Edit: Don't feel bad, I've rebuilt bikes before cause I put the rings in upside down....

Seat of the pants compression reading says below 100 psi, I will get my gage from work later but I can have it apart sooner than running for the gauge. I wonder if I didn't chamfer the ports enough? Maybe cracked a ring?

No cracked rings bore looks good , not much crosshatch left though. The headgasket looks like crap too.

It looks like I left the petcock on, now there's alot of fuel in the crankcase

So after taking a great nap I went out and flipped the rings over and reassembled it. Fired right up! I did add another 3 oz of gn2 to my 2 gallons of fuel . No smoke with this stuff? I really want to see blue smoke
