"Most teachers accrue generous retiree health benefits as they work, but retiree health care is excluded from Bureau of Labor Statistics benefits data and thus frequently overlooked. While rarely offered in the private sector, retiree health coverage for teachers is worth roughly an additional 10 percent of wages."

No where does it show up as a source or reference for the conclusions draw upon by the article.

In typical GL fashion this thread got lost from it's original post. To that, TSA, sorry to hear about your luck and use this event to your advantage. Go back to school, take a vacation, do some yard work, try to stay positive about this all.

Got new options, not official though.

1. Demote with same pay, retrain for 6 weeks, and work harder.
2. Transfer to DTW.
3. Severance package. (no details)

I am tired of people who keep saying "Well, you should be thankful you can keep your pay and demote!" Because they get mad at me when I say "You're right, because all promotions should be temporary!"

Glass half full.

You keep your pay, your job, and lose the promotion. At least you can get the promotion back if it becomes available again.

Worst case you accept the demotion and keep a steady pay-check while you search for something better. At least you have some options and they are being upfront and honest (seemingly anyway) about things.

Yes, I get tired of that "don't complain because someone somewhere has it worse" argument. I start thinking; well sure, regardless of who you are and whats happening to you there probably someone somewhere that has something worse happening to them. But then I think; but there has to be someone somewhere that really does have it the worst out of the 7 billion people on earth. I'd hate to be that person because their life must really suck.

Don't try to distract us from our debate. You should become a teacher because they only work part-time and make more money and have better benefits than the rest of society (except Congress and the President that is).

Depends on the severance package and your position in life. If you have a wife and kids and house payment, I would take option 1 and start looking for a new job / attending classes in parallel because that is not a rewarding future. Unless Option 3 will cover your expenses for 1 year because in this economy it might take you that long to find a new job. Option 2 sucks. You loose any reputation you have built in your current role, and I assume you just keep your same salary?

Whatever you do, don't get the same career as amc78cj7. You will just become a jealous ornery person.

And don't become a teacher, as they will tell you, it's the worst possible job, you will be underpaid and will have to deal with those pesky kids instead of playing on your iphone.

I have yet to see a teacher complain that they are underpaid. I have seen several people criticize that they are overpaid.

Apples & oranges.

If you can piss, bitch, and moan in this thread, thank a Teacher.

BTW tsaguy, I've been in your position several times over the years and I feel your pain. You're smart, you will be fine in the long run.
