Register your domain and build a simple site. Wordpress offers a bunch of simple setups that would do the trick.

SEO is built on saying the same thing a number of ways, and changing content frequently. Ongoing blogs and customer reviews are probably the best way for a small business like you to keep content up to date and show up in the search engines. Create writeups of happy clients, ask them to review your work, etc. Update it regularly with current info with a bunch of relevant keywords.

Facebook is good but use it to direct traffic to your website.
Yep. For $15/month you can get setup with liquidweb hosting, and more bandwidth that you will ever need.

Install WordPress, find a theme you like, and pay a high school graphic design student to make you some artwork.

If you really want to get Googles attention, do an occasional blog post about plumbing maintenance, tips, and tricks for consumers. Not only will that give Google more to index, it will help build a following among potential customers.

$15? Way too much. Here's just one example of less expensive at $5/mo.

http://www.bluehost.com/

There are plenty of others.

Bluehost/hostgator sucks ass. My site went from 12 second page load times to less than 2 second load times after I moved to liquidweb. The extra $10/month is worth it for liquidwebs phenomenal service.

Phenomenal service? You get a reach around from LW for driving customers there?
Every hosting company has negative publicity.

Sorry about your bad luck with that specific host but you should have bitched and gotten moved to a better server or switched to any of the other web companies out there in the same price range. Or maybe you did, either way, I don't care and it doesn't apply to Rob's startup web presence so keep that in mind for your rebuttal. Just think about what you're telling a plumber, presumably with no I.T. background; "Go pay over $180/yr for advertising + find an inexpensive web developer and pay them on top of that, but you'll probably not see return from your expense for a while."

Rob's doing it on the cheap with Facebook now so it's clear he either doesn't have, or doesn't want to spend a lot of money on it.

Maybe you could hook him up and sub-let space on your LW plan?

Or maybe CC already does that for GL member businesses?

I don't get shit for sending people to LW.

I tried to get switched to a different box on Bluehost, but every time I'd ask about it, they wouldn't be able to find anything wrong with the box, and they would tell me load times were just fine on their end. I don't like being lied to.

If Rob isn't going to make back $180/year on having a website, then it isn't worth his time having one built.

He's certainly welcome to go to a cheaper host, but if you get on a shitty box, you are fucked, and there's no resolution.

Sure there is. You're always free to take your money to another provider, as you proved by moving to LW yourself.

And it cost me the price of two Web hosts, instead of one...

Install cameras in the bathrooms you work in, that will bring you to the top of a google search quickly

You should've picked one with a money back guarantee or did a charge back through your card since you didn't get what you were paying for.

That might still be an option, but with as crappy as their service is, I doubt it's worth the hassle of trying to get my money back.

I use bluehost. It's super easy and you can do everything from one dashboard.
