Default Facebook/email blatant misinformation

Ever see stuff on facebook or receive a chain email from somebody about this or that travesty and you think, hmm, sounds too far fetched to be true... so you take the 2 seconds to google it and find out that it is all a fabrication or mostly fabricated?

Here's my follow up, what do you do?

Do you try and correct the person on their misinformation or just let it be?

I generally will just leave a snopes link in the comments or email it back to them. It generally goes one of two way, 1, they thank you for the correction, yet leave the post up, or 2. argue about personal political beliefs, unrelated to the misinformation.

Another, question, is simply correcting them considered "being a dick"?

I'm talking a response like, "actually that isn't true, here's the correct info: __"

By doing so, do you ever feel like you're enabling ignorance?

Not really

I feel that if i'm going to ignore some of them then I might as well ignore them all. That way i'm not splitting hairs; they all get the same treatment

Things like this can be turned back around on you, for example;

I'm not saying either is right, but without your own personal research with mutilple sources, its still just hear say.

I find it best just to leave it alone, and I have a tolerance set. I just block the people who annoy me the most.

That's usually how I present it, but some people view confrontation or disagreement as being a dick.

I ignore it.

I just decided yesterday that to improve my facebook content and experience I would pear my friends list down to only those people I have actual face to face interactions with on a more than once a year basis. It almost entirely eliminated this type of crap.

I have a buddy who constantly emails over the top political stuff. I originally ignored it and said "oh, that's Mike". Finally I started replying to him (and the other 20 people he emailed) with corrections. Now he sends me much less garbage.

What pissed me off is the couple times I didn't question it and forwarded it, only to be corrected. Then I look like the ass........... which i was.

I just have a few people I go back and forth with. Then there are the people who share EVERYTHING. And when I call them out, they get pissed.

I just post "This is incorrect." and the snopes link or whatever. It has cut down on it pretty good.

I actually was surprised to see how many people had no idea what snopes was.

It depends on who posted it, what the topic is, and how I'm feeling.

A few people I know would want to be informed, a few I would enjoy telling them they're wrong, and some that I would just leave alone.

There are some topics I feel strongly about and would try to correct misinformation, and some that I couldn't care less about and won't bother to look up.

And there are some days where I wan't to argue with everyone about everything, and some days where I just don't care.

Why should you treat BS on FB any different than BS on GL?
