I've just been running around central UP for the last two weeks. I went 65 all the time, I saw a few cops and they didn't even notice me.

People are fun when there is a passing lane....everyone goes 63 until the end of the passing lane, then they go back to 55.

Fixed it

I wish the PIT maneuver was legal some times.

I just came back from the UP last weekend. It doesn't matter what the speed limit sign says, there's always some a-hole pulling a camper at 55mph with a line of cares a mile long behind him...

No shit. WTF!

BTW, I learned the hard way that in the UP the left lane is for PASSING only. I was the only car on the road and a cop pulled me over for driving in the left lane when not passing a vehicle.

Yup. Sounds about right.

BTW, there is a sign before each passing zone to keep right unless passing.

Which makes perfect sense if there is another car on the road that is going below the speed limit in the right lane. But it was just me and the cop, both going exactly the speed limit (cruise control so he wouldn't pull me over). The only way an imaginary car would be able to pass me (therefore requiring me to be in the right lane) is if it were breaking the law and exceeding the speedlimit.

There's a little more to the story, but you just have to believe me that he was looking for an excuse. I think he was bored. That, or he though I looked good as I got into the car and was looking for a reason to talk to me.

My friend was almost killed driving to Tech when an opposing car went into the gravel shoulder, overcorrected, and came back into him. That is why you take all the distance you can get from oncoming traffic.

So you were going exactly the speed limit in the passing lane with the cop behind you and you didn't move over to let him pass? Yeah, you earned a roadside chat for that display of driving prowess.

Perhaps, but the road had only split into 2 lanes 0.1 miles before he turned on his flashers. He was looking for an excuse. He probably saw my package from across the road as I got into my car. Did I mention I was wearing shorts?

63 MPH all the way across state boys didn't even flinch. It helped that most everyone was keeping up, the passing lane always came soon enough

That passing lane law isn't just in the U.P.

As for the oncoming traffic reasoning, I do the opposite. I am a huge lawbreaker. I often drive in the passing lane, as the OP did, because it offers more escape routes should an incident start unfolding, or because our state is WAAAY overpopulated with deer. The chances of a deer running into the road and almost infinitely more plausible than an oncoming car swerving. The safe thing to do is drive in the passing lane to allow more time and space for maneuvering. This is why some states use "slow traffic keep right" signs... because that makes more sense, and doesn't create criminals out of safe drivers.

It was encouraged before everyone had a cellphone.

"Get your pos out of the fast lane you freaking hippie" Watch the headlights twirl around a few times in your rear view and be on your way.

I miss the good old days.

If they raise the speed limits i hope the truck speeds are increased as well. 60 MPH is way too slow. What they should do is take examples from highways in europe that have multi lane speed limits. left lane is the highest speed while the right lane is the slowest speed. also enforce minimum speeds not more than 20 mph less than the posted limit.

The UP doesn't have multiple lane highways so I don't see how this applies.
