It is, if you get a ticket where the speed is artificially low, you could feasibly fight it and have it dismissed. Depends on if the court is 500 miles away from where you live, though...

Pretty sure the speed limits used to be 70, until the oil embargo in 1973 brought about a national 55 mph speed limit. Of course, the cars of the 50's, 60's, and 70's were super safe, with huge brakes, awesome tires, excellent handling, amazing headlights, and tons of passive safety measures, so it was far safer to travel at those speeds. Let's not forget that they never got any snow back then either, the 70's were very low snowfall years, sometimes the snow didn't even last until June!

I wholeheartedly believe that 70mph on state highways, and 80 on freeways is plenty safe.

Just stay down where you are. The speed limits are fine up here.

The US31 stretch from Holland to Grand Haven needs badly to be raised from 55... The cop who works GH City limits to Filmore from traffic stops, paid for his cruiser in the 1st 2 years after he was assigned to the TWP. He generates his salary with ease ever year.

I try to keep it between 60-65 up there, I've been pulled over and clocked at 63, but was also let off. Like you, it was enough to remind me how expensive that other ticket was.
When my grandpa was dieing in WI, I was making frequent trips there. Some of the straight portions on 28 allow you to see headlights ten miles down the road. After traveling 85 and slowing down for approaching headlights, I said "fuck it, there's no cops in the up at 3am" and drove 85 past the next car which ended up being a trooper. I was actually stopped on the side of the road before he turned around. Handed him my CPL and my drivers license, and we chatted about a basketball player I graduated from high school with, and I was on my way.

I'm guessing a state trooper in the UP deals with meth, drunks, and car accidents.

When I got my speeding ticket it was from a Township cop.

It seems like everytime I got pulled over by a trooper I was given a warning.

Up them. Those of us that want to and are capable of driving faster can. Everyone else will still drive slow. 16 Mile Rd is 55 MPH from Dequindre all the way to Metro Beach. It's been that way for a few years now, and most people don't drive any faster than they did before. I guess most people assume it's 45 since that's the limit on 16 in Troy.

Seems that's about how it is. The wife was pulled over closer to town while I was headed to Minnesota and got a warning from the state trooper. I gave her a bunch of crap for it....then slowed my ass down for the rest of the trip. I haven't had a ticket in a long long time but the last one I got was very expensive.

I'm familiar with the kinetic energy formula. I did not say there is the same force of both impacts. My point is the cars in both accidents will be totaled.

More people will be totaled out vs walking away but that wasn't my argument.

US-131 in GR was increased to 70 because of this. Back in my younger days I had a few tickets through the "old" S curve when it was 45. I want to say it was 3(15+ over)?

I had one where a 50ish officer had me sitting on the curve at wealthy.

I am a bit more controlled now about speeding after having my balls governed for the last 5 years in someone else's truck.

The UP should be 80 for cars and trucks. But, not for campers or people towing stuff. Most of those tires are not rated for speeds above 65/70mph and will wear out quickly above the rated speed causing increased accidents and blowouts.

Are there any highways (two lane roads) that the speed limits over 55?

Just wondering I've never been on one that I can think of.

Too bad that part has full access from everywhere unlike South of Holland and North of Grand Haven which are limited access. I doubt that part in the middle is going anywhere.

They are starting to do this in the UP, but slowly. There is a stretch by Gladstone/Esky area that went 70 recently. There is also I-75 and over by Iron Mountain somewhere. Personally I'd rather see them setup to go 65 like Wisconsin. Not interstate speeds, but as fast as everyone goes anyways.

FWIW I've held the theory that they keep putting in more and more passing lanes. One year they'll do what they are talking about now and just up the speed because it will be all 4 lane highway.

In Colorado, where I am living right now, most divided highways are 75 and undivided roads are 65. Most people out here obey the speed limit because it feels like a reasonable speed limit. People are more likely to speed if they feel that they can safely drive faster than the posted speed.
