Default 80MPH speed limits in the UP?

Under new legislation in Michigan (proposed by Sen. Rick Jones) the move could potentially raise the speed limit on some local freeways from 55 and 70 mph to 75, or even 80 mph in the Upper Peninsula. Jones said the move would protect motorists from being unnecessarily ticketed by corrupt municipalities that use speed traps to generate local revenue.

CBS Detroit surveyed Michigan residents and found that 70 percent support raising the speed limits, and 30% oppose.

In MI I believe its law they have to do a study before changing speed limits. They are allowed to increase it if they observe a certain percentage of drivers already traveling at the newly proposed speed.

That would mean they can make I-75 between Dixie highway and Lapeer road 95mph?

I was driving 84 this morning in the middle lane and cars were passing me on the left and the right.

People on 94 between 696 and 96 are an odd bunch. Speed limit posted in most of that stretch is 55, but people who actually do that speed fukc up those that are trying to do 80!

An article i read said the average speed traveled in a 55 mph speed limit was 73 mph on highways, when they changed the speed limit to 70, the average speed stayed at 73 mph.

When I am on a country road and the speed limit is 55 I am normally doing about 72. When I am on the freeway, I am doing about 76.

So I agree with ya!

Older people remember the good ole' times when there were no speed limits and no seat belts required. Thank you nanny state government for looking up for my safety (sarcasm).

I'm all for it. I spent enough time driving back and forth thru the UP and the risk of cops was the only logical reason for keeping it close to the 55mph speed limit. Certain stretches should definitely fall into the 70mph category(US 2, Seney stretch, etc). Deer and wildlife will be a risk, but not much more than they already are.

When I was a bus driver in Okemos the school district tried to get a speed limit changed. It'a a pain in the butt. I'm pretty sure every level of police (city, county, and state) were involved and it's ultimately up to the State. From what I understand, it's like pulling teeth to get them to change the speed limit. They take into account traffic load, intersections, how many interactions, etc.

I have a hard time believing that. Not that I wouldn't mind being able to go 50

What about tractors and other farm implements on said country highways? Houses with kids along the highways?

Making getting on and off it harder? I have to assume that would just be for the more barren ones... just thinking out loud

I'm all for it. The existing speed limits are still what they were 30 years ago when vehicles were not nearly as safe or handled as well.

Maybe some would, but the average speed would likely stay the same. At least the fines would be lower if caught!

Lots of "loosly populated" areas have speed limits above 70.

In ND, I did not increase my typical speed due to the higher speed limit. it was nice to have a limit of 75mph, I could them drive my typical 74-75 without any fear of citation,
