Default 2nd job reference question

So I am thinking of getting a weekend job for a few months to get a couple bills paid off quicker. I need the ever wonderful advice from a 4x4 site about who to use for references as I know others have been in this situation before.

Should I tell my main employer about the situation and ask to use them as a reference? Or just sneak the second job under the table and not let the first one know?

This might bring some good discussion... or maybe/probably not...

Is the second job in the same field as your main source of income?

$.02

employer can use 2nd job as an excuse for lack of performance if they feel they want to get rid of you. I've read a few articles on 2nd jobs/ways to make more money outside of work/ etc. and most said that the cons outweigh the pros of it.

Chances are the 2nd job doesn't require a large skillset. I would just tell whoever you give the application to that this is a second job.

You are definately correct on the 2nd job being nothing skilled, and the 2nd job already knows it will be a 2nd job.

And I also agree about the cons vs. pros, which I am still on the fence about it myself.

Depends on your employer and if your 2nd job will impact your main job performance. My employer likes having agressive people and has no issue with 2nd jobs as long as it has no impact here.

Personally, unless you fear something, I think it is better to have open dialog with your employer about it. Why, what and for how long can be discussed and then there are no issues.
